He conducted a complete survey of Lake Tanganyika and from there encountering great difficulties travelled south-eastthrough the Southern Congo region and Angola. In he reached Katombela, north of Benguela on the Atlantic coast, becoming the first European to cross Equatorial Africa from east to west. On hisreturn to England, Cameron was received with muchacclamation. He was promoted to commander, madea C.B., awarded the gold medal of the Royal GeographicalSociety and was created hon.
