Arraiolos is a town, located approximately at the centre of Portugal, right behind Lisbon.The inhabitants have been making embroidered carpets since the Middle Ages. These were not knotted, but made using a needle on a weave that was made beforehand. Originally these carpets were made by Moorish craftswomen. But in the 16th century, they were threatened, killed and driven away by Christian fundamentalists, just like the Jews.
