Rare full set of yr old Antique Lithographic Prints
Hand Finished Antique Lithographic Prints from the Instructive Picture Book 'Quadrupeds' 60 Full Colour Half Folio Plates This is the rarely obtainable FULL SET of genuine Original Prints from the second edition published in by Edmonston & Douglas of Edinburgh. Fully titled: THE INSTRUCTIVE PICTURE BOOK Lessons from The Geographical Distribution of Animals or The Natural History of the Quadrupeds which Characterise the Principal Divisions of the Globe" (I have scanned and posted some examples from the collection if you wish to see any others please contact me.) These prints taken from this wonderful 148 year old book are universally considered to be the very finest of Victorian animal prints. The printing plates were made of limestone and the plates were printed using a complex colour lithograph printing method and hand finished, they are reminiscent of Japanese woodblock prints. Both this style and the prints themselves are very rare. Published for sale to wealthy Victorian families as an aid to their children's understanding of natural history, this book, by the usage of some of the most attractive antique prints of animals that have ever been made sought to give children of the era not just an idea of what these exotic animals looked like, but of their natural habitat. Each print is of an animal set in what was, at the time, believed to be its natural environment. The full set is offered with the books cover boards title pages and original texts. SIZE: Each Half Folio (page) is approx:- 8ΒΌ'' x cm x 30cm) with the print plates being 10β x cm x 17cm) QUALITY: The prints are 148 years old and have never been framed, they do show signs of ageing with some yellowing around the white borders encompassing the prints. There may also be some deterioration to the edges of the page, especially the seam where the leaf has been separated from the page. This does not affect the condition of the plates themselves which are very good, the colours are bright and clear, some have light oxidisation marks (faint brown spots) but there is no foxing (mildew marks). Please review the image carefully as it is a direct scan of the print. Please note these prints are untouched! They have been removed from the book and no attempt has been made to remove any blemishes, retouch, clean or trim them. They are in the condition as described and any significant marks (other than the aforementioned foxing) on the plates are desribed below. All the plates are in very good condition with the following exceptions: 23 -Australia Kangaroo few very small light inkspots on plate) 26 - Australia Anteater; 2β light embossed line on upper part of plate. 31 Africa β Elephant, some ink damage to central upper part of plate 57 Arctic Regions Walrus - pencil markings in top left border only, no marks on plate.
