These verses compose the Jewish prayer "Shema Yisrael", beginning with the phrase: "Hear, O Israel, the LORD (is) our God, the LORD is One". In mainstream, i.e. Rabbinic Judaism, a mezuzah is affixed to the doorframe of Jewish homes to fulfill the mitzvah (Biblical commandment) to inscribe the words of the Shema "on the doorposts of your house" (Deuteronomy 6:9). First book is Maimonides THE EPISTLE TO YEMEN, probably a compilation of several shorter responsa, was written by Maimonides about in reply to an inquiry (or inquiries) by Jacob ben Netan'el al-Fayyumi, the then head of the Jewish community in Yemen. The exchange of letters was occasioned by a crisis through which the Jews of that country were passing. A forced conversion to Islam, inaugurated about by 'Abd-al-Nabi ibn Mahdi, who had gained control over most of Yemen, threw the Jews into panic.
