John Claughton, from Leeds, UK started out as an instrument maker at Leeds College of Music studying Musical Instrument Technology in general but Guitar making in particular. He became a professional Instrument Maker in specialising in the manufacture of Classical Guitars. He also started making folk instruments including vihuelas (he's an expert in this field). He was asked by the George Formby Society to make Banjoleles for them and made them for a few years in the late 90's and early 00's, (he sits between Ron Spiers and Phil Cartwright in this role and didn't brand all of these Banjoleles " the Griffin"). He has largely given up Ukulele making as he wasn't selling enough and now works mainly on the folk instruments. He produced quite a few Banjoleles he branded "the Griffin" and some Soprano, Tenor and Concert Ukuleles during this period though. this information i have found on the internet about john claughton who has retired from instrument making quite a few years ago now. the ukulele is number 199 of 200 made by john claughton and is in prestine condition with no wear at all,comes in tweed hard case. rare now,i have not seen another one for sale ever. This is an incredible sounding ukulele, some visible repairs to a few cracks on the side of the uke hence the much reduced price (i believe these go for around a grand without any repairs). I have the original wooden friction tuning pegs which are obviously included, but for the sake of playability i have some lovely geared tuners installed. I bought this from John Alvey Turner 2 years ago, the neck is straight and the frets are perfectly even with no buzzes anywhere on the fretboard. This uke has such a powerful bright and punchy sound. Reluctantly having to sell this to fund a guitar purchase. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like more details.
