The sliding cheek passes through the mouthpiece and allows the same principle of action as a gag. With strong contact to the curb rein attached to the lower ring, the mouthpiece is eased up the cheek of the bit as far as the slot will allow - the longer the space between the top and bottom of the slot (neck) of the cheek, the greater the leverage. In this case the travel is very limited and merely allows room for mouthing, The cheeks too are movable in this type, allowing the eyes at the top of the cheeks to turn upwards.
