Spheres of Influence in International Relations

Spheres of Influence in International Relations

Spheres of Influence in International Relations: Current events happening around the world, especially the 'humanitarian interventions' by NATO and the West within the context of the so-called Arab Spring, make the understanding of the role of spheres of influence in international politics absolutely critical. Hast explores the practical implications and applications of this theory, challenging the concept by using historical examples such as suzerainty and colonialism, as well as the emergence of a hierarchical international order.

Terrorism in Perspective

Terrorism in Perspective

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Mahan, Susan G. / Griset, Pamala / Mahan, Sue, PUBLISHER: Sage Publications (CA), For decades, terrorist events have brought the subject of terrorism to the forefront of cultures around the globe and in more recent years, to the United States. And, for as long as violence has been a part of the human experience, the definition of terrorism has been widely debated. Terrorism in Perspective offers undergraduate and graduate students a comprehensive overview of global and domestic terrorism. Rather than focusing on a single definition of terrorism, this volume casts a wider net, focusing on acts of terrorism and their relationship to culture, religion, history, politics, economics, and ideology. Each chapter is introduced with a rich overview of the issues, actors and actions specific to the topic under discussion, providing students with context prior to articles culled from a wide variety of popular, academic, and governmental sources. These previously published articles were selected to deepen the reader's understanding of terrorism by focusing more intently on specific themes. Chapter topics include homegrown terrorism, international terrorism, female involvement in terrorism, the symbiotic relationship between the media and terrorism, and both conventional and non-conventional terrorist tactics. Recommended as a general reference text and as a primary text for undergraduate students in international relations, politics, and violence and terrorism courses.

Race Relations in Colonial Trinidad

Race Relations in Colonial Trinidad

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Brereton, Bridget, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, In this study of the development of a colonial Caribbean territory in the late nineteenth century the diverse peoples of Trinidad - Europeans, white Creoles of French, Spanish and English descent, Africans, Creole blacks, Venezuelans, Chinese and Indian immigrants - occupy the centre stage. They formed a society deeply divided along lines of race, skin colour, economic position and educational level. Dr Brereton looks at how the white elite, both European and Creole, was able to control the society, largely unchecked by the Imperial power and its agents in Trinidad, and then investigates the emergence of a group which would challenge that control: the coloured and black middle class. This book makes an important contribution to the history of the West Indies, and especially to the history of Trinidad, still largely unresearched. It will interest historians and sociologists concerned with the development of post-emancipation Caribbean societies and with race relations in the Americas after slavery.

Opening Doors: Perspectives on Race Relations in

Opening Doors: Perspectives on Race Relations in

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Knopke, Harry J. / Rogers, Ronald W. / Norrell, Robert J., PUBLISHER: University Alabama Press, On June , The University of Alabama provided the backdrop for what would become a lasting symbol in U.S. civil right history. With his stand in the schoolhouse door staged at Foster Auditorium on the University's campus, Governor George C. Wallace attempted to defy a federal mandate by blocking the admission of two black students to the University. The nature of racial prejudice and discrimination - its causes, its history, and is impact on society - was the focus of a national symposium hosted by The University of Alabama to mark the 25th anniversary of the stand in the schoolhouse door. On this occasion major participants in the Wallace stand reconvened to reflect on the issues and circumstances surrounding that event. In addition, because of the original event's central place in civil rights history, and because of the many racial disturbances and difficulties occurring today, scholars from across the country were asked to contribute to an extensive examination of racial prejudice and discrimination. This book is based on the presentations commissioned for the symposium and is divided into three sections: Historical Context, Current Psychosocial-Cultural Assessments of Prejudice and Discrimination, and Strategies for Change. The contributors include Dan T. Carter, E. Culpepper Clark, John F. Dovidio, Samuel L. Gaertner, Rhoda E. Johnson, James Jones, Leon F. Litwack, Fannie Allen Neal, Mortimer Ostow, Thomas F. Pettigrew, and Walter G. Stephan. The editors have provided introductions to each of the three sections that place the chapters in both historical and contemporary contexts."Opening Doors" describes the progress that has been made in this country in the relationships between and among the races since a sneering Governor Wallace withdrew from the University campus, telling bystanders to "come back and see us in Alabama." The volume also sheds new light on our understanding of prejudice and discrimination and serves to broaden our current perspectives on the traditions, values, attitudes, and behavior patterns that contribute to and reflect these negative components of race relations. At the same time, by recounting historical issues associated with prejudice, racism, and discrimination, by offering current analyses of these concepts, and by suggesting strategies for effecting appropriate and meaningful change, "Opening Doors" leads to a clear understanding of the nature and extent of progress yet to be realized before we are able to engage in harmonious race relations and enjoy the benefits of a more just society.
