Funk & Wagnalls New Practical Standard Dictionary of the English Language . Volumes 1 (A to L) and 2 (M to Z) - Collectors item or for those just interested in reference works of the period. Funk & Wagnalls were an American publisher renowned for their reference works from as early as the late 19th Century to the late 20th Century. These dictionaries, which were printed in Chicago in the United States, are in some respects more like encyclopedias, indeed based on the famous Chambers encyclopedias, they were later renamed to reflect the excellent content. Their dictionaries were noted for their emphasis on ease of use and current usage and espoused four policies pertinent to its initial and future publications: the ordering of definitions according to current, rather than historical, usage; the appearance of etymologies at the end of definitions, rather than at the beginning; the use of one alphabetical list for all entries, rather than separate sections for geographical, biographical, mythological, or biblical terms; the use of lowercase initial letters for all entry titles except proper nouns. The internal condition of the two volumes is amazing given that they are nearly 70 years old now (it doesn’t look as if anyone has used these volumes very much at all) and feature lovely pictures and illustrations - just take a look at the pictures. The covers at first sight look good too, with the bindings and hardback covers in a burgundy faux-leather with gilt titling. As one would expect for the age of the books, there is some wear at the top and bottom of the spine of each volume and to a lesser extent at the front corners of the hardback covers.
