Identity, Culture and Globalization: The Annals of the

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ben-Rafael, Eliezer / Sternberg, Yitzhak, PUBLISHER: Brill Academic Publishers, This book is about contemporary sociological analysis: its discussions, contradictions and controversies. Authors from various backgrounds discuss developments on all continents. The 34 contributions are centered on six themes. The first is multiple modernities, showing us that there is no single road to the modernization of societies. The second theme is globalization, with new concepts like spatialization, world languages and new social movements. In part three, multiculturalism and diaspora movements are viewed as the pivotal factors for change in many societies. The fourth theme is the decline of the accountability of the state, concentrating on the shortcomings of traditional states and the emergence of new resources. In part five, the concept of postmodernity is discussed from the angles of identity, social reality, detachment and legacy. Finally, the sixth part, 'Toward a New Agenda’ looks into the future and lets sociology (or rather social knowledge) play a major part in today’ s society. This volume is a rich collection of practical examples and solid arguments by some of the best sociologists in the world. Buy Now

The Rise of Market Culture: The Textile Trade and French

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Reddy, William M., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, Combining the perspectives of anthropology and social history, Professor Reddy traces the transition from precapitalist to capitalist culture in the French textile industry from to . He shows how and why a new conception of the social order based on the idea of the market began to emerge, and examines the attendant political and social conflict. Focusing on the northern regional centres in France which led the movement toward mechanisation, the author - employs the methods of cultural anthropology to find that even by French textile labourers had failed to develop a social identity commensurate with the idea of wage labour. This discovery leads him to a critique of the market idea that suggests radical new interpretations of the social history of industrialisation as well as of the concept of ?class consciousness?.

The Culture of Criticism and the Criticism of Culture

The Culture of Criticism and the Criticism of Culture

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gunn, Giles B., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, Giles Gunn's important new work is at once a provocative defense of the kind of moral reflection once associated in America with the writings of Lionel Trilling and Edmund Wilson and an acknowledgement that this pragmatic legacy must be reevaluated in the light of challenges posed by structuralist and post-structuralist theory. Including detailed discussions of such thinkers as Kenneth Burke, Clifford Geertz, Mikhail Bakhtin, Richard Rorty, Trilling, and Wilson, Gunn challenges the assumptions of modern criticism with a revised interpretation of pragmatism and its critical legacy. Part critical analysis, part philosophical argument, part literary and cultural history, this work is a carefully delineated vision of what criticism actively engaged in its society can accomplish.

Recentering Globalization: Popular Culture and Japanese

Recentering Globalization: Popular Culture and Japanese

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Iwabuchi, Koichi / Koichi Iwabuchi / Iwabuchi, PUBLISHER: Duke University Press, Globalization is usually thought of as the worldwide spread of Western--particularly American--popular culture. Yet if one nation stands out in the dissemination of pop culture in East and Southeast Asia, it is Japan. Pokemon, anime, pop music, television dramas such as "Tokyo Love Story "and "Long Vacation"--the export of Japanese media and culture is big business. In "Recentering Globalization, " Koichi Iwabuchi explores how Japanese popular culture circulates in Asia. He situates the rise of Japan's cultural power in light of decentering globalization processes and demonstrates how Japan's extensive cultural interactions with the other parts of Asia complicate its sense of being "in but above" or "similar but superior to" the region. Iwabuchi has conducted extensive interviews with producers, promoters, and consumers of popular culture in Japan and East Asia. Drawing upon this research, he analyzes Japan's "localizing" strategy of repackaging Western pop culture for Asian consumption and the ways Japanese popular culture arouses regional cultural resonances. He considers how transnational cultural flows are experienced differently in various geographic areas by looking at bilateral cultural flows in East Asia. He shows how Japanese popular music and television dramas are promoted and understood in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, and how "Asian" popular culture (especially Hong Kong's) is received in Japan. Rich in empirical detail and theoretical insight, "Recentering Globalization" is a significant contribution to thinking about cultural globalization and transnationalism, particularly in the context of East Asian cultural studies.

Victorian Christianity at the Fin De Siecle: The Culture of

The period known as the fin de siecle (usually taken to mean the years between and ) was a fluid and unsettling epoch of endings and beginnings,as well as of new forms of creativity and anxiety. The end of the century has attracted much interest from scholars of literary and cultural studies, who regard it as a critical moment in the history of their disciplines; but it has been almost completely ignored by religious historians. Frances Knight here sets right that neglect. She shows how late Victo

While the youth counterculture remains the most evocative and best-remembered symbol of the cultural ferment of the s,the revolution that shook American business during those boom years has gone largely unremarked.
