Hurley Silhouette Mk III 17ft Bilge Keel Pocket Yacht

For Sale, our Silhouette Mk III, 'Spike'. Spike is in great condition and is a hoot to sail. Our reason for selling, is to move to a larger boat so I can take all 3 'crew' with me. He is a very handsome boat though. Spike can be launched from the trailer that he comes with or by crane if required. Kit includes, 2 mains, 1 foresail, fenders, ropes, anchors x2, Yamaha outboard (1 think 3.5 HP-will need to check), seat cushions, depth sounder, speed display. From the very active and informative Silhouette owners site: The Silhouette was designed by Robert Tucker, a naval architect who loved dinghy cruising, which involved sailing by day and camping on the bank or beach by night. Mr Tucker felt that it would be a good idea to make a dinghy with a lid on it and avoid sleeping on the cold ground. He did not fancy a capsizable craft, so he set-to and designed a little cruising yacht and the Silhouette was born. In the first one was built, called "Blue Boy", for the cost of £85. This was the Mk1 and 29 were built. With the success of "Blue Boy" Robert Tucker redesigned and built the Mk 2 and the first was named "Susanne"; she was built for just over £100 by Yarmouth Boat Builders. In a Mk2 was put in the London Boat, Caravan and Camping Show. It was at this show George Hurley first met Robert Tucker and saw the Silhouette, Mr Hurley was showing caravans at the same show. Around the same time Ernie Miners, a carpenter who worked for George Hurley, asked permission from George to build himself a 'Redwing' dinghy on the premises at Richmond Walk. Seeing the dinghy being built, George decided that his factory could also build boats. In George Hurley started to build Silhouette Mk2s and at the London Boat Show that year entered a Silhouette for the all-up price of £265. Around of these ply Mk 2s were build between and when Hurley had changed over to just GRP. In experiments where made with this new material called glass fibre, this was first used for sinks for the caravans and boats, then a mould was made for a Silhouette deck fitted into a ply hull. In Hurley also started building the Mk 2 in glass fibre. About 370 of these were built between and . In the Silhouette was redesigned again as the Mk3: round bottom, all GRP. About 365 of these were built between and . In the Mk 4 was designed and built at Hurley Marine between and and 25 were built. After Hurley Marine went out of business in , the moulds were sold to Russell Curnow of Marazion, Cornwall and Silhouettes were built there up to . R Curnow also built a Mk 5, the price in was £ complete. R Curnow also built the H18 after Hurley Marine. One of the best Hurley 22's available and possibly the best! 'Rochelle' has always been regularily maintained by me and previous owners and has spent nearly all of her life in Cornwall. She has just been polished and antifouled for this season and is ready to sail with no outstanding issues or repairs needed. Currently on a pontoon berth in Premier Falmouth Marina. The berth could be transfered if required. Before launching in May 'Rochelle' had 2 new batteries fitted, new through hull log transducer and new galley waste skin fitting changed. She comes with beaching legs so drying out is no problem, Cobra DSC vhf radio, Garmin 72 GPS, Nasa Clipper log, Nasa clipper depth, Autohelm autopilot, Tricolour at masthead and a steaming light. Sailing cruising yacht Bavaria ft LOA with 8 berths in 3 double cabins plus saloon. Fin keel.

Excellent condition cabin version of this popular yacht. 'Dotty Dot' has the standard 1.7m draft fin keel giving access to most creeks rivers and anchorages without fear of going aground and has side opening gates for those who may struggle to get over the guard rails. She has Vectran cloth fully battened Sanders mainsail replacing the original Dacron sail with Rutgerson rollers making raising and lowering easier and faster than usual. There is an extra reef compared to the standard yacht, so the main can be reduced by 70%, very useful once the wind gets over 30 knots. The 140% genoa is also a Sanders make with Vectran cloth. The engine is a Volvo HP Diesel with saildrive giving 8 knots maximum speed. Winches are Harken 2 speed with a electric anchor windlass. Mast and Rigging are Selden with Furlex headsail reefing. The standard rigging was replaced by Ocean Rigging of Lymington three years ago as a planned maintenance precaution. The Raymarine electronics include speed, depth, log, wind, radar, autohelm, gps all interfaced through a C70 chart plotter plus DSC VHF radio. The domestic equipment includes fridge, gas oven, hot water calorifier, 2 x 140 Ah Varta batteries with shore supply battery charger. There are fore and aft 150l water tank and the diesel tank also holds 150l. There is a sugar scoop bathing platform with ladder and hot/cold fresh water shower. The yacht has never been grounded heavily or suffered serious damage. She has competed in the Round the Island Race at least 10 times and in , only 2 yachts out of the 55 yachts in the Bavaria Owners class crossed the line ahead of us so sailing performance is very good. The yacht has crossed the Channel 12 times with a best time of eight and half hours from the Needles to Alderney. The yacht is routinely maintained to keep it in first class working order and was last dry docked for fresh antifouling in May . There are too many safety features and extras to list here which are not included on the standard yacht. For instance the engine compartment has an extra bulkhead to prevent clean agent fire extinguisher medium from disappearing into the bilges and and fire resistant lagging on the seawater cooling inlet hoses. Galley has stainless steel protection on all surrounding non fireproof surfaces and extra clipping on points and jackstays have been fitted on deck. The battery compartment has an extractor fan as hydrogen gas is produced during battery charging. There is a Jabsco sea toilet which is changed every two years as are the major hoses. There is a large black/grey water holding tank to comply with European and inland waterway regulations with deck pump out which was an optional extra at the time of purchase not on the standard yacht. The large through hull valve was replaced this year. The lifejackets number 10, eight of which are Ocean Safety manual 150N professional versions which are equipped with spray hoods and lights, newly serviced June . There is a 4 man little used inflatable on board. Two anchors, main is 45lb plough anchor with exceptional holding and 50m of chain plus kedge anchor with 10m of chain and 50m of warp. The yacht is generally 7 berth but ours has a modification to the saloon table to allow it to convert to a double berth. The yacht has some 6ft 6" headroom. The yacht is currently afloat Lymington where any interested buyer would be welcomed aboard for a test sail with no obligation whatsoever.
