Like many of his relatives Hubert van Outryve joined the resistance, in particular the Secret Army.He was arrested in Bruges in and was sentenced to do two and a half years of forced labour. He was accused of having offered shelter and assistance to a spy (it concerned his brother Thierry), supported work refusers, hidden a radio and having listened to the BBC.In June , Kassel was deported to Germany and, then, to the camp in Straubingen. However he never reached the camp as he died in transit due to his injuries and the hardships he had suffered.The book also includes a letter that states: 'De auteur is op 11 juni door de Duitsers gedeporteerd, enkele dagen nadat hij de laatste hand aan dit had gelegd (1 juni '44).
