The name was probably coined by the mayor of Vlissingen, Johan van Buytenhem, who, among other things, had a deer in his family crest. It was a so-called "spiegelretourschip", built by orderof the "Chamber of Zeeland" on the Korendijk yard of Middelburg. The length was metres, width metres and it was equipped with 42 cannons. There were 256 people aboard, including 83 soldiers and six civilian passengers, including renowned lawyer Jan Douw, who was going to Batavia to take up employment at the court.
