Caucasus, early 20th century. This kind of carpets are never big, approx. 100 x 150 cm and they are always of very high quality. Even at that time, they were meant to be a status symbol, hence their high quality. No ordinary carpets. Has been made with great craftsmanship, using extremely refined colour combinations and nuances. The knot density is unusually high, knots/m², quite flat, knotted with wool on wool. This carpet has a central field which is very soft green, a pale celadon. An unusual and rare colour. It features fertility symbols all over. The main edge is called Kufic border, Shami, meaning Syrian.A reference to the Kufic script, andit is an early ornament that appears for the first time during the 19th century is used up to the first quarter of the 20th century. A beautiful golden yellow on a very dark blue background.Condition: in very beautiful and original condition, worn but not worn-down edges. The green is somewhat more yellow in one corner due to the sunlight. A small repaired tear in the centre of an edge and an old restoration; a small piece of 1.5 x 4 cm which was knotted skilfully.
