Miletus, in Minor Asia, capital of Ionia, was located a fewkilometres away from the Meander river (Büyük Menderes), close toborders of the Ancient region of Caria. Some legends attribute the foundation of this city to Miletus, son of Apollo.  The city of Miletus is famous due to the large number of colonies it created (more than seventy), especially on the Black Sea. It dominated the Mediterranean Sea for some time, and resisted against Alexander. Later, it became a large Roman city.  The bay of Miletus got progressively stuck in the sand over the centuries, until the obstruction of the city's harbour, which caused its decline.
