The Heart and the Fountain: An Anthology of Jewish Mystical

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Dan, Joseph, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, Joseph Dan is one of the world's leading authorities on Jewish mysticism. In this superb anthology, Dan not only presents illuminating excerpts from the most important mystical texts, but also delves into the very meaning of mysticism itself. Dan takes readers through the historical development of Jewish mysticism, from late antiquity to the modern period. He explores the Kabbalah, the esoteric tradition that delves into the secrets delivered by God to Moses on Mount Sinai, the emergence of Hasidism, and much more. He presents the great texts, from Hekhalot Rabbati, "The Greater Book of Divine Palaces," set in the temple in Jerusalem; to the apocalyptic vision of Abraham Abulafia in the thirteenth century; to the Zohar, perhaps the best-known volume of all. For each piece, he offers an extended introduction that deftly places the work in the context of its time and its antecedents. "Mysticism is that which cannot be expressed in words, period," Dan writes. In this remarkable volume, he guides us through that seemingly impenetrable barrier to show how the inexpressible has been expressed in some of the most profound and challenging writing in existence.

Heidi and Rolland Baker are two of my dearest friends and it has been a great privilege to serve their network of over churches in southern Africa. As I have witnessed many miraculous healings and phenomenal church growth, the Spirit has called forth a most unsettling question deep in my spirit: why so much there and so little here? God and the Gift: An Ecumenical Theology of Giving

God and the Gift: An Ecumenical Theology of Giving

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Saarinen, Risto, PUBLISHER: Liturgical Press, The observation that contemporary ecumenical, theological, and philosophical discussions center on the issues of reception and the gift but neglect the basic act of giving is the starting point of God and the Gift. Risto Saarinen asks if we can approach these discussions from the perspective of giver and from the very act of giving? In God and the Gift Saarinen demonstrates that we do have theological resources that enable us to outline a theology of giving and they provide an opportunity to approach old problems from a relatively new viewpoint. He deals with basic philosophical and theological resources and outlines some specific modes of giving, in particular forgiveness, sacrifice and thanksgiving, and imitation or giving an example. God and the Gift outlines a brief theology of giving by employing both classical theology and contemporary discussions. It also points out the ecumenical relevance of the theology of giving. For those who are more interested in particular theological and philosophical topics, some new interpretations are offered for further discussion. Among these are an interpretation of forgiveness as negative giving, a discussion on the relationship between sacrifice and divine non-violence, and a new proposal to conceptualize various types of Christian imitation. These aims are connected with the overall claim that instead of looking at reception and the gift we should focus on the issue of giving. Saarinen illustrates this shift of perspective with observations and examples. Though not discussed exhaustively, they serve as preliminary signposts showing us the way to proceed. Chapters are "Introduction: Giving and Receiving," "The Gift: Contemporary Approaches," "NewTestament and Martin Luther," "Forgiveness and Negative Giving," "Sacrifice and Thanksgiving," "Giving an Example-Being Gifted," and "Ecumenical Sharing."

Born to Believe: God, Science, and the Origin of Ordinary

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Newberg, Andrew / Waldman, Mark Robert, PUBLISHER: Free Press, "Born to Believe" was previously published in hardcover as "Why We Believe What We Believe." Prayer...meditation...speaking in tongues. What do these spiritual activities share and how do they differ? Why do some people believe in God, while others embrace atheism? From the ordinary to the extraordinary, beliefs give meaning to the mysteries of life. They motivate us, provide us with our individual uniqueness, and ultimately change the structure and function of our brains. In "Born to Believe," Andrew Newberg, MD, and Mark Waldman reveal -- for the very first time -- how our complex views, memories, superstitions, morals, and beliefs are created by the neural activities of the brain. Supported by groundbreaking original research, they explain how our brains construct our deepest convictions and fondest assumptions about reality and the world around us. Using science, psychology, and religion, the authors offer recommendations for exercising your brain in order to develop a more life-affirming, flexible range of attitudes. Knowing how the brain builds meaning, value, spirituality, and truth into your life will change forever the way you look at yourself and the world.
