Acquiring Genomes: A Theory of the Origins of Species

Acquiring Genomes: A Theory of the Origins of Species

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Margulis, Lynn / Sagan, Dorion / Sagan, Dorion, PUBLISHER: Basic Books, How do new species evolve? Although Darwin identified inherited variation as the creative force in evolution, he never formally speculated where it comes from. His successors thought that new species arise from the gradual accumulation of random mutations of DNA. But despite its acceptance in every major textbook, there is no documented instance of it. Lynn Margulis and Dorion Sagan take a radically new approach to this question. They show that speciation events are not, in fact, rare or hard to observe. Genomes are acquired by infection, by feeding, and by other ecological associations, and then inherited. "Acquiring Genomes" is the first work to integrate and analyze the overwhelming mass of evidence for the role of bacterial and other symbioses in the creation of plant and animal diversity. It provides the most powerful explanation of speciation yet given.

Embryos, Genes and Birth Defects

Embryos, Genes and Birth Defects

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ferretti, Patricia / Copp, Andrew / Tickle, Cheryll, PUBLISHER: John Wiley & Sons, The first edition of "Embryos, Genes and Birth Defects," edited by the late Peter Thorogood, was a radical new book aimed at bridging the gap between the medical disciplines of embryology and dysmorphology, and recent advances in cellular, molecular and developmental biology. This new edition remains unique in its breadth and brings up to date our understanding of birth defects and of the strategies utilized to gain such knowledge. It features new chapters on human cytogenetics, mutagenesis and the eyes and ears. The book presents key topics in developmental biology and explains how they provide the foundations for understanding clinical birth defects. The first six chapters introduce concepts and strategies adopted to elucidate developmental anomalies leading to birth defects. The book then focuses on specific organs and reviews the cellular and molecular mechanisms affecting their development and how disruption of these mechanisms by genetic or environmental factors may underlie certain birth defects. The chapters are concise and provide up-to-date coverage of topics in a format that is easily accessible and yet at the forefront of research. Written primarily for paediatricians, obstetricians, clinical geneticists and allied workers, this book guides the reader through the contribution of modern molecular biology to our understanding of human development. Developmental and cellular biologists will learn how errors in the cellular and genetic mechanism can lead to classical disorders, diseases and syndromes.

Designer Genes: Tales from the Biotech Revolution

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Stableford, Brian M., PUBLISHER: Five Star (ME), From the author of last year's critically acclaimed "Year Zero." A tireless believer in the advancement of biotechnology and the wonders it can bring to humanity, Brian Stableford has used his fiction, both short and long, to explore all sides of the advantages and hazards of tinkering with ourselves, our environment, and our planet. Five Star Publishing is pleased to collect eleven of his best stories in "Designer Genes: Tales from the Biotech Revolution," postulating what life might be like when anything and everything is subject to the whims and desires of man; who will always want something better, bigger, larger. With an all-new introduction by the author on how these stories came to be, this is a collection sure to delight hard science fiction fans everywhere. Some of the stories in this collection include: "What Can Chloe Want?," "The Invisible Worm," "Hot Blood," and "The House of Mourning." Brian Stableford lives in the UK.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cavalli-Sforza, L. L. / Cavalli-Sforza, Luigi Luca / Piazza, Alberto, PUBLISHER: Princeton University Press, Hailed as a breakthrough in the understanding of human evolution, "The History and Geography of Human Genes" offers the first full-scale reconstruction of where human populations originated and the paths by which they spread throughout the world. By mapping the worldwide geographic distribution of genes for over 110 traits in over primarily aboriginal populations, the authors charted migrations and devised a clock by which to date evolutionary history. This monumental work is now available in a more affordable paperback edition without the myriad illustrations and maps, but containing the full text and partial appendices of the authors' pathbreaking endeavor.

Integration in Respiratory Control: From Genes to Systems

Integration in Respiratory Control: From Genes to Systems

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Poulin, Marc J. / Wilson, Richard J. A., PUBLISHER: Springer, The neuronal circuit that generates breathing, the regulation of breathing, and its integration with other physiological systems is of utmost importance to human health. However, breathing abnormalities are common, and sleep apnea alone is estimated to affect 18 million in the United States. As one of the major complications of obesity, the prevalence of sleep apnea is likely to increase in the coming years. Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS), asthma, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and the pathophysiology of panic and related anxiety states also involve aspects of respiratory control. Integration in Respiratory Control: From Genes to Systems comprises the proceedings of the 10th Oxford Conference held at Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada, from the 19th to the 24th of September, . This series of meetings was originally begun to bring physiologists and mathematicians together, in order to address critical issues in understanding the control of breathing. This volume includes the latest findings and developments at the genomic, cellular, and system levels that pertain to the physiology of cardio-respiratory control, including integrative physiology and modeling, central integration and neuromodulation, rhythm generation and plasticity, chemosensory transduction and signaling, pre- and post-natal development, and post-genomic perspectives. About the Editors: Drs. Marc J. Poulin and Richard J.A. Wilson are Associate Professors in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Buy Now
