Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. Huge title, which gives a flavour of the book's range: Opera omnia medico-practica, et anatomica: Editio XVII. Cui praeter Dissertationes, aliosque Tractatus Anteactis editionibus adjunctos, item ejusdem Georgii Baglivi Canones de Medicina Solidorum, Dissertatio de Progressione Romani Terraemotus, De Systemate Usu Motus Solidorum in Corpore Animato, De Vegetatione Lapidum, Analogismo Circulationis Maris ad Circulationem Sanguinis... Nec non Joannis Dominici Santorini opuscula IV. de Structura Motu Fibrae, de Nutritione Animali, de haemorrhoidibus, de Catameniis. Covers: earthquakes, motions in the human body, stones in bodies, animal nuitrition, hemorrhoids etc etc. George Baglivi was an Armenio-Italian physician and scientist. He made important contributions to clinical education, based on his own medical practice. His De Fibra Motrice advanced the "solidist" theory that the solid parts of organs are more crucial to their good functioning than their fluids, against the traditional belief in four humors. Baglivi, however, advocated against doctors relying on any general theory rather than careful observation. This book is crammed full of such observations. He served as an assistant to Marcello Malpighi, beginning in Bologna in and following him to Rome the next year when Malpighi was named chief personal physician ("archiater") to the pope. While serving under Malpighi, Baglivi performed experiments on the circulation of blood in frogs; he also injected various medicines into dogs' veins and spinal canals and experimented on their pneumogastric nerves. He utilized a microscope to study the structure of muscles and the brain. Following Malpighi's death in , Baglivi performed his autopsy and gave an thorough description of the cerebral apoplexy that killed him.(Lyons?) S.l., Bassan, . Quarto in contemporary full calf binding. [2 ff.], 635 pp., [9 pp.], 1 frontispice (portrait of G. Baglivi) and five engraved plates, including the much love map of southern Italy with the two hairy tarantulas (with a 28 pages text on the spiders).A fabulous resource of a popular 18th century book. The covers are somewhat worn, but the spine is attractive and the interior full of interest. Read more
