At the end of he was sent to Constantinople as head of a military mission. He became Inspector General of the Turkish army and was very closely involved in its reorganisation. When the war broke out, he was Commander-in-Chief of the 1st Turkish army. As of April , he was given an operational role as Commander of the Fifth Army that was responsible for the Gallipoli peninsula. His reputation rose considerably after the successful defence of the region against the British-French invasion. However, the final victory was mainly due to the leadership of Kemal Ataturk. He could not prevent that the allies could successfully evacuate from the beaches in Gallipoli.In early , at the head of an army group, he tried to impede the advance of Allenby through Palestine and Syria. In the absence of efficient supply and troop reinforcements, he could not prevent the front collapsing. In he himself narrowly escaped becoming a prisoner of war in Nazareth.
