Obviously, he positioned himself as a rival to Shakespeare! I asked myself these two questions: What is a western, and this even more important question, what is a Shakespearean western? And who was Shakespeare in Alejandro mind? The interesting part of this challenge was the idea to compete with a kind of ancient tragedy to move the western into an ambitious literary genre. On the other hand, having a reliable historical story was a key issue. I did not want to watch any Hollywood movies, to be inspired by John Ford or Sergio Leone, but I wanted to put together the various parts from photos. I liked to contemplate some faces of characters, to enter a certain intimacy which is possible with the photo: see how they dress, for example.
