Framing Class: Media Representations Of Wealth And Poverty

Framing Class is a cutting edge book that examines the sociological implications of class representations in the media and shows how slanted media framing of stories about wealth and poverty may significantly influence many people. Through a historical and contemporary analysis of newspaper articles and television shows,Framing Class demonstrates how the media perpetuate negative stereotypes about the working class and the poor while glorifying the material possessions and privileged status o

Women and Death: Representations of Female Victims and

The theme of women and death is pervasive in the German culture of the past five centuries. With the conviction that only an interdisciplinary approach can explore a typology as far-reaching and significant as this, and in accordance with the feminist tenet that images are accountable for norms, this volume investigates how iconic representations of women and death came about and why they endure. Traditionally, representations of women as agents of death -- when they have been considered at all -- have been

City of Plagues: Disease, Poverty, and Deviance in San

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Craddock, Susan, PUBLISHER: University of Minnesota Press, Disease may not discriminate, but it helps those who do. When smallpox struck many areas of San Francisco during the nineteenth century, the Chinese were only one of the populations affected, yet they were blamed for its spread. Tuberculosis in the early twentieth century disproportionately affected poor immigrants, but it also negatively informed social policy about poverty and poor neighborhoods. Addressing these diseases meant undertaking social, physical, and symbolic realignments of the city, processes that come into sharp relief in City of Plagues, an absorbing look at the role of disease and health policy in the construction of race, gender, and class, and in urban development in nineteenth- and twentieth-century San Francisco. Because of its association with medicine, health policy is generally perceived as objective. Yet, as this book demonstrates, its interpretive responses to disease have determined the social location and material reality of those groups at real or perceived risk. Focusing on San Francisco between and , Susan Craddock considers tuberculosis, plague, smallpox, and syphilis as diseases whose devastations were derived in part from their use as political tools and disciplinary mechanisms. She shows how health policy, by concentrating its responses to smallpox and plague on Chinatown and the Chinese, profoundly influenced the physical look and social location of the Chinese community. She also reveals how the city's antituberculosis campaign, while leaving the disease's root causes untouched, promoted social and domestic restructuring, particularly in its emphasis on women's roles as "health-gatekeepers", maintainers of the values of hygiene, nutrition, and sanitation. Recent instances of AIDS in San Francisco and tuberculosis in New York suggest that little has changed -- and that, as Craddock argues, unless health policies begin to address economic inequity, poor housing, and racial and gender discrimination, then disease will continue to characterize and shape urban society.

Representations of Lie Algebras

Representations of Lie Algebras

Representations of Lie Algebras: This bold and refreshing approach to Lie algebras assumes only modest prerequisites (linear algebra up to the Jordan canonical form and a basic familiarity with groups and rings), yet it reaches a major result in representation theory: the highest-weight classification of irreducible modules of the general linear Lie algebra. The author&apos s exposition is focused on this goal rather than aiming at the widest generality and emphasis is placed on explicit calculations with bases and matrices. The book begins with a motivating chapter explaining the context and relevance of Lie algebras and their representations and concludes with a guide to further reading. Numerous examples and exercises with full solutions are included. Based on the author&apos s own introductory course on Lie algebras, this book has been thoroughly road-tested by advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students and it is also suited to individual readers wanting an introduction to this important area of mathematics.

The Malthus Factor: Poverty, Politics and Population in

The Malthus Factor: Poverty, Politics and Population in

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ross, Eric B., PUBLISHER: Zed Books, This book represents a major critique of the way Malthusian thinking has influenced capitalist development policy in the modern period, as well as in the past. Taking an historical and comparative view, it highlights the strategic role of Malthusian ideas in the defence of capitalist political economy when confronted by struggles for equality and human progress. The leading historical example the author takes offers a major reassessment of the origins of the Irish Famine. His contemporary case study focuses on the Green Revolution, which the author analyses in terms of a broad Western strategy of capitalist agricultural development in the face of peasant insurgency. He examines how Malthusian arguments portrayed agricultural modernization as a humanitarian attempt to forestall a food crisis in the developing world when, in reality, he argues the agenda was to defer land reform and bolster existing rural class structures. Finally, the book examines how the political economy of underdevelopment is currently being obscured by alarm over the environmental impact of over-population, and how such Malthusian concerns represent the poor, not as victims of capitalist development, but as perpetrators of environmental destruction.
