Framed print of Simon Patterson's 'The Great Bear' in
The Great Bear is a lithograph by Simon Patterson. This is a ong>framedong> ong>printong> ong>ofong> the work which is no longer available for purchase. A copy ong>ofong> The Great Bear can be found in the Tate Gallery. Adapting the ong>ofong>ficial map ong>ofong> the London Underground, Patterson has replaced the names ong>ofong> stations with philosophers, actors, politicians ong>andong> other celebrated figures. The title The Great Bear refers to the constellation Ursa Major, a punning reference to Patterson's own arrangement ong>ofong> ''stars''. Patterson playfully subverts our belief that maps ong>andong> diagrams provide a reliable source ong>ofong> information. ''I like disrupting something people take as read'', he comments. The copyright ong>ofong> the work is shared between the artist ong>andong> London Underground from whom the artist obtained permission after protracted negotiation. The metallic frame around this ong>printong> is heavy ong>andong> attractive ong>andong> really enhances the work. It alone would cost more than this! The overall dimensions are 71cm x 51cm. It cost £140 but, unfortunately, since moving house, we have nowhere appropriate to put it so, reluctantly are ong>ofong>fering it for sale. An absolute bargain to create space.
