Egyptian Shabti Figure, about 6.5 cm tall. Worn, but facial features and relief clearly visible. Not sure about period, picked it up in a fair ages ago. Possibly ptolemaic period. This fine 2.5" tall reproduction bronze is of a cat sacred to the Egyptian goddess of love, fertility and joy, Bast or Bastet. These cats were characteristically upright yet at rest, confident of their power and beauty. The worship of Bast dates from at least BC, reaching its height around BC when thousands of pilgrims poured into the temple at Bubastis to take part in the annual festival. *** This figure is properly cast in the fire from solid base metal and bronze plated. It is NOT 'cold cast'.   FORVM Eastern India Buddhist Terracotta

Eastern India, Buddhist Terracotta Votive Sealing, c. 8th Century Antiquities authenticated and attributed by Alex G. Malloy. At holy sites and temples Buddhist pilgrims would purchase small votive offerings, to present to the shrine to be interred inside a stupa, or to take home as a memento. Votive offerings varied from place to place and over time. They were often made of terracotta and included small plaques, stupas, and sealings. The various sealings texts include meaningless pseudo-writing, repeated mantras, passages from the Ramayana, the Buddhist creed, prayers, etc. Because few early Buddhist manuscripts have survived in India, the writings found on these humble sealings provide a rare glimpse of the various scripts used in India in ancient and early medieval times. -- http://papyri.tripod.com/buddhist/introsealings.html

Indus Valley, Terracotta Mother Goddess Bust, 3rd Millenium B.C. Antiquities authenticated and attributed by Alex G. Malloy. Fertility cults were common in the prehistoric cultures of the Indus Valley and the adjacent regions. Invariably female figurines were involved, which are commonly referred to as Mother Goddesses. Female figurines made in terracotta have been found in a large number sites including Nausharo in the Kacchi Plains of Eastern Baluchistan, Nindowari in the Baluchistan Highlands, and Moenjodaro and Harappa in the Indus River Valley.

Roman Republic, Bronze Askos Pitcher, 1st Century B.C. We are pleased to offer Alex G. Malloy's personal collection of Roman antiquities. Malloy, former dealer in antiquities for 40 years. An askos is an assymetric vessel imitating the shape of a leather wine-skin, with an off-center mouth, convex top, and single arching handle.

  FORVM Byzantine Empire Lead Bulla Seal -

Byzantine Empire, Lead Bulla Seal, c. 5th - 12th Century During the Byzantine period, lead bullae (singular, Bulla) were widely used to seal and identify the sender of correspondence and containers in shipment. An iron, pliers-shaped instrument, a boulloterion, was used to impress the designs on a lead bulla seal. After the cord was wrapped around the package or document and the ends inserted in a channel in the blank seal, the seal was placed between the disc shaped engraved dies on the jaws of a boulloterion. The boulloterion had a projection above the jaws, which was struck with a hammer to impress the design on the seal and close the channel around the two ends of the cord. With a bulla in place a container cannot be violated without visible damage to either the bulla or the cord, ensuring the contents remain tamper-proof until they reach their destination.
