Familial and Friendship Relations and Spatial Socialities

Familial and Friendship Relations and Spatial Socialities: Geographies of children and young people is a rapidly emerging sub-discipline within human geography. There is now a critical mass of established academic work, key names within academia, growing numbers of graduate students and expanding numbers of university level taught courses. There are also professional training programmes at national scales and in international contexts that work specifically with children and young people. In addition to a productive journal of Children's Geographies, there's a range of monographs, textbooks and edited collections focusing on children and young people published by all the major academic presses then there is a substantive body of work on younger people within human geography and active authors and researchers working within international contexts to warrant a specific Major Reference Work on children's and young people's geographies. The volumes and sections are structured by themes, which then reflect the broader geographical locations of the research.

Hollywood Action Films and Spatial Theory

Hollywood Action Films and Spatial Theory

Hollywood Action Films and Spatial Theory: This book applies the discourse of the so-called 'spatial turn' to popular contemporary cinema, in particular the action sequences of twenty-first century Hollywood productions. Tackling a variety of spatial imaginations (contemporary iconic architecture globalisation and non-places phenomenological knowledge of place consumerist spaces of commodity purchase cyberspace), the diverse case studies not only detail the range of ways in which action sequences represent the challenge of surviving and acting in contemporary space, but also reveal the consistent qualities of spatial appropriation and spatial manipulation that define the form. Jones argues that action sequences dramatise the restrictions and possibilities of space, offering examples of radical spatial praxis through their depictions of spatial engagement, struggle and eventual transcendence.

Soviet-Vietnam Relations and the Role of China

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Olsen Mari / Olsen, Mari, PUBLISHER: Routledge, This new book analyzes how the Soviet leadership evaluated developments in Soviet-Vietnamese relations in the years from to . Focusing on how Soviet leaders actually perceived China's role in Vietnam relative to the Soviet role, it shows how these perceptions influenced the Soviet-Vietnamese relationship. It also explains how and when Moscow's enthusiasm for the active Chinese role in Vietnam came to an end - or, in other words, from what point was Beijing's involvement in Vietnam perceived as a liability rather than an asset, in the strategies of Soviet policy makers. This book is an excellent resource for all students with an interest in Soviet-Vietnamese relations and of strategic studies and international relations in general.

Spatial Prepositions Spatial Prepositions Spatial

Spatial Prepositions Spatial Prepositions Spatial

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Vandeloise, Claude / Bosch, Anna R., PUBLISHER: University of Chicago Press, This striking study of the meaning and use of the major spatial prepositions in French provides valuable insight into how the human mind organizes spatial relationships. Most previous analyses of spatial prepositions have assumed that their semantic properties can be adequately explained by familiar logical and geometrical concepts. Thus, the standard view of the preposition "in" as it appears in the sentence "the ball is in the bag" postulates that it refers to the geometrical relation of inclusion. This paradigm, however, falters when faced with the contrast in acceptability between sentences such as "the bulb is in the socket" and "the bottle is in the cap." The force exerted by the "landmark" (a conceptually fixed object) on the "target" (a moveable object) is crucial in this difference: the functional notion of containment seems more operational in the use of the preposition "in" than inclusion. That is, what are taken to be the landmark and the target depend greatly on the "functions" these objects serve in the human scheme. This offers important clues to otherwise problematic linguistic quirks, such as why one sleeps "in" one's bed, while one is said to lie "on" one's deathbed. While many of the examples apply in English as well as French, there are some noteworthy differences--in French one sits "on" a chair, but" in" a couch. Vandeloise convincingly argues that it is precisely this subjective element which makes a standard geometrical account unfeasible.
