The Community Group was formed to support the development of young people, especially the disadvantaged, through the media of performing arts. F.L.A.M.E. Young Theatre Players is a voluntary/community group based in Islington. We recognise the potential and creativity within young people and aim to help them to unlock this through the learning, researching, experimenting and practicing of traditional and modern art forms. Performance provides an outlet through which they can use their skills for the benefit of others in their community. Our organization works with after school clubs. What we need: We seek funding for the continuation and general running of our projects, to help fund venue space, equipment, volunteer’s expenses, workshop leaders and administration. The funds will not only provide the children/young people with free workshops but also help continued enhancement for our community. Impact: F.L.A.M.E. uses the performing arts as a basis and a tool to reach out to young people within the inner London areas. Using dance, drama and music we support young people to break down barriers and discover their own skills and talents. We provide opportunities for young people from different cultures and backgrounds to come together and develop mutual understanding and respect. We have had over 30 volunteers since starting our Project in August that have either moved to higher education or have started employment in their desired areas. The volunteers have benefitted by gaining and enhancing their people skills, which enables them to project this in work or education environment. They are able to use this experience to better themselves and show examples to others within their own communities. Our future aims are to continue and develop projects for children/young people by delivering free workshops. Some of our biggest achievements are helping young people back into education, employment or training. So far we have managed to get 3 vulnerable young people we have worked with back into education, 1 into an apprenticeship and one participant has set up his own tutoring business.
