Engines of Domination: Political Power and the Human

Political power -- armed central authority, with states and war -- is it really necessary for human society? Or is it a tool that ruling elites use to live at the expense of society? Engines of Domination offers a theory of political power as a tool for making tools of human beings -- an engine that converts human energy into power and privilege for the rulers. Invented in the Bronze Age and brilliantly refined for six thousand years, today this engine threatens to destroy our world in the human emergency.

Maxwell Owusu is a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at the University Michigan. Educated at the London School of Economics, Harvard University, and the University of Chicago, he has taught at the University of Ghana, Legon. Today, nearly a century later, the claims of minority communities and the politics of pluralism continue to ignite explosive debate. The Reckoning of Pluralism centers on the case of Turkey's Alevi community,a sizeable Muslim minority in a Sunni majority state.
