Empire and Modern Political Thought

Empire and Modern Political Thought

Empire and Modern Political Thought: This collection of original essays by leading historians of political thought examines modern European thinkers&apos writings about conquest, colonization and empire. The creation of vast transcontinental empires and imperial trading networks played a key role in the development of modern European political thought. The rise of modern empires raised fundamental questions about virtually the entire contested set of concepts that lay at the heart of modern political philosophy, such as property, sovereignty, international justice, war, trade, rights, transnational duties, civilization and progress. From Renaissance republican writings about conquest and liberty to sixteenth-century writings about the Spanish conquest of the Americas through Enlightenment perspectives about conquest and global commerce and nineteenth-century writings about imperial activities both within and outside of Europe, these essays survey the central moral and political questions occasioned by the development of overseas empires and European encounters with the non-European world among theologians, historians, philosophers, diplomats and merchants.

Liberalism Under Siege: The Political Thought of the French

Liberalism Under Siege: The Political Thought of the French Doctrinaires is a compelling examination of the French Doctrinaires,a largely neglected group of liberal thinkers in post-revolutionary France who were proponents of a nuanced sociological and historical approach to democracy. It combines textual analysis and historical interpretation to explore the Doctrinaires' ideas on the French Revolution, democracy, political power, sovereignty of reason, publicity, capacity, and representative government.

Indian Thought and Western Theism

Indian Thought and Western Theism

Indian Thought and Western Theism: The encounter between the West and India in the modern period has also been an encounter between Western modernity and the traditions of classical Indian thought. This book is the study of one aspect this encounter, that between Western scholasticism and one classical Indian tradition of religious thought and practice: the Vedanta. In the modern period there have been many attempts to relate Western theistic traditions to classical Indian accounts of ultimate reality and the world. Parallels have usually been drawn with modern forms of Western philosophy or modern trends in theism. Modern Indological studies have continued to make substantial use of Western terms and concepts to describe and analyse Indian thought. A much-neglected area of study has been the relationship between Western scholastic theology and classical Indian thought. This book challenges existing parallels with modern philosophy of religion and forms of theism. It argues instead that there is an affinity between scholasticism and classical Indian traditions. It considers the thought of RA mA nuja (traditional dates CE), who developed an influential theist and realist form of VedA nta, and considers how this relates to that of the most influential of Western scholastics, Thomas Aquinas ( CE). Within what remain very different traditions we can see similar methods of enquiry, as well as common questions and concerns in their accounts of ultimate reality and of the world.Arguing that there is indeed an affinity between the Western scholastic tradition and that of classical Indian thought, and suggesting a reversal of the tendencies of earlier interpretations, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Asian religion, Hinduism and Indian philosophy.

Cultural and Political Intersection of Fair Trade and Justice: In The Cultural and Political Intersection of Fair Trade and Justice, Stenn uses Amartya Sens theory of justice and Geert Hofstedes theory of cultural dimensions to answer the question: Is Fair Trade fair This exciting new volume focuses on a study of the effects of Fair Trade on indigenous women. Their stories are reported by the women themselves, which Stenn uses to develop a deeper understanding of Fair Trade, globalization, culture, and policy in building justice. This comparative study of Fair Trade and its effect on Bolivias Andean women, working independently in handicrafts and collaboratively in agriculture, analyzes how Fair Trade has grown to become a multi-billion dollar, global industry. Stenns 15 years of working with indigenous Andean women makes this in invaluable source for the study of Fair Trade and for Bolivias population.

Political Persuasion and Attitude Change

Political Persuasion and Attitude Change

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Mutz, Diana C. / Sniderman, Paul M. / Brody, Richard A., PUBLISHER: University of Michigan Press, "Political Persuasion and Attitude Change" defines and introduces a new field of research, one that investigates the alteration of people's attitudes: when people can be moved, and when they cannot. Each chapter synopsizes a major area of political persuasion and provides an update on the latest findings as well as overviews of past research in each area. Whole sections of the book center on the three major agents involved in the political persuasion process: the mass media, political elites, and individual citizens themselves. "Political Persuasion and Attitude Change "boldly contradicts the received wisdom on the extent of mass media's influence on political attitudes and argues that the media's effects are indeed massive, rather than limited. It explores the impact of political elites on the persuasion process, and focuses on individual control over the persuasion process. This volume is unique in that chapters address theoretical as well as methodological issues, simultaneously combining reviews of literature with the latest research findings. It will appeal to scholars and students interested in the study of political persuasion in contemporary politics across the disciplines of political science, psychology, sociology, and communications. Arabic Thought and Islamic Societies (RLE Politics of Islam)

Arabic Thought and Islamic Societies (RLE Politics of Islam)

Arabic Thought and Islamic Societies (RLE Politics of Islam): This is a study of the structure and composition of the official learning current in medieval Arabic culture. This comprises natural sciences both exoteric and esoteric (medicine, alchemy, astrology and others), traditional and religious sciences (such as theology, exegesis and grammar), philosophical sciences such as metaphysics and ethics, in addition to technical disciplines like political theory and medicine, and other fields of intellectual endeavour. The book identifies and develops a number of conceptual elements common to the various areas of official Arabic scientific discourse, and shows how these elements integrate these disparate sciences into an historical epistemic unity. The specific profile of each of these different sciences is described, in terms of its conceptual content, but especially with reference to its historical circumstances. These are seen to be embodied in a number of institutional supports, both intellectual and social: paradigms, schools of thought, institutions of learning, pedagogic techniques, and a body of professionals, all of which combine to form definite, albeit ever renewed, traditions of learning. Finally, an attempt is made to relate Arabic scientific knowledge in the Middle Ages to patterns of scientific and political authority.First published in .

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Owusu, Maxwell, PUBLISHER: Ghana University Press, The first edition of this book, published in , was widely acclaimed as the best account of grassroots politics to have emerged from Africa. One of its unique features is the extent to which the author has effectively integrated historical and anthropological issues into a political frame. The book is divided into three parts: the first looks retrospectively at the first edition and its relevance to Ghana's past, present and future; the second part considers the importance of comparative political studies to the development and fostering of the growth of an informed and knowledgeable political public and opinion leadership, covering history, culture and politics; and the third part presents an intellectual overview of Ghanaian political change, from Nkrumah to the peaceful transfer of power from the National Democratic Congress government to the New Patriotic Party at the start of the new millennium. Maxwell Owusu is a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at the University Michigan. Educated at the London School of Economics, Harvard University, and the University of Chicago, he has taught at the University of Ghana, Legon. Engines of Domination: Political Power and the Human

Political power -- armed central authority, with states and war -- is it really necessary for human society? Or is it a tool that ruling elites use to live at the expense of society? Engines of Domination offers a theory of political power as a tool for making tools of human beings -- an engine that converts human energy into power and privilege for the rulers. Invented in the Bronze Age and brilliantly refined for six thousand years, today this engine threatens to destroy our world in the human emergency.
