Drawmer classic unit, home use, great sound - Mic Pre / Vacuum Tube Compressor There is little doubt in the minds of many engineers and producers that vacuum tubes possess a unique sound quality providing a "warmer, more alive" sound. Combining eight active tube stages and the low noise and reliability of solid state electronics, the Drawmer provides the ultimate direct interface between the sound source and the recording medium. The Drawmer is a two channel unit with each channel comprised of a completely natural sounding "soft knee" vacuum tube compressor and an extremely low noise microphone pre-amplifier with switchable 48 volt phantom power. A further auxiliary instrument pre-amp with EQ is also provided. This powerful combination of the classic valve circuit, offering unsurpassed tonality, and the low noise balanced microphone input with up to 60dB of gain has allowed engineers throughout the world to exploit the full potential of high performance condenser microphones. An example of this would be the direct to digital stereo recording of live classical music without the necessity of a mixing console. The Compressor: Because the compressor is a soft knee type, it requires few controls. Strictly speaking, a soft knee design does not have a rigidly defined threshold but the title 'Threshold' has been retained for the "amount of compression" control for the sake of familiarity. The Threshold range is continuously variable between infinity and -24dB, the theory being that signals below the threshold are essentially unprocessed and the signals exceeding this threshold are subjected to increasing amounts of gain reduction dependent on by how much they exceed the threshold. The attack and release times are switchable rather than being continuously variable and this method of operation falls into line with that of its all valve predecessors. Attack simply offers a choice of slow, medium and fast whilst release has six settings. Positions one to four have fixed release times whilst positions five and six are two different programme dependent release time modes making the unit ideally suited to programme material with complex dynamics such as complete stereo mixes and vocals. Interestingly, the attack times are further modified by the choice of release setting so the range of choices are wider than it might first appear. Because compression is a form of controlled gain reduction, a stage of make-up amplification follows the compressor section giving a range of +20dB. The VU meters may be switched to monitor either the amount of gain reduction taking place or the output signal level and the two channels may be used either independently or as a stereo pair, depending on the setting of the stereo link switch. The side chain access points may be used to patch in equalisers to enable the compressor to act as a de-esser. As with other Drawmer products, the by-pass switch offers a choice of Normal, By-pass and Side Chain Listen modes so that if you have patched in any additional side chain processing, you can easily monitor what effect it is having. In addition to the balanced microphone and line inputs on the rear of the unit an auxiliary input on the front panel gives direct access for guitars or electronic instruments. Equalization is provided along with sufficient gain to overload the tube pre-amp for sustain effects. The Aux input is a valuable addition as it combines the virtues of a D.I. box and equalizer with the compressor allowing the instrument to be simultaneously processed and routed to the mixing console or directly to the recorder. Groove Tubes GT67 Multi Pattern Tube (valve) Condenser Mic

This microphone sounds better on vocals and instruments than some costing many times more! The GT-67 is a multipattern tube condenser It was for several years the flagship microphone in the Groove Tubes line. The GT-67 uses a 32mm, center-terminated true condenser capsule with Aspen Pittman’s disk resonator system, a custom-wound nickel-core output transformer, and a GTM vacuum tube-based impedance conversion circuit. The mic has very high sensitivity, 35 mV/Pa, making it useful for quiet sources at the possible expense of clipping on very loud sources. The mic has a switchable -10dB pad to provide extra headroom in such cases, giving it a max SPL (padded) of 140dB. A switchable high-pass filter provides a -12dB rolloff below 75Hz. The mic provided four polar patterns: Cardioid, Omni, Hypercardioid, and Figure-8. From what we can discern, the polar pattern is selectable via a pair of mini toggle switches on the rear of the microphone body (confirmation forthcoming), rather than from the power supply. This GT67 includes an elastic shockmount (p/n SM4), a power supply, a 25-foot cable, and a hard mount (p/n HM1). Cable is not shown in the pictures. Great little channel with a mic pre or line in / opto compressor / enhancer from Joe Meek, a Ted Fletcher design. Excellent, fully working condition. XLR mic in (with optional 48v phantom power) and unbalanced 1/4" jack line in. Opto compressor with variable release and fast/slow attack switch. Plus enhancer and drive. PSU included. Here's the info... THE INPUT STAGE The 'front end' is an entirely new design using 5 complete stages of amplification controlled by a single volume control. The design gives (microphone) input headroom of more than 30dB; the input is floating balanced and will easily accept microphone levels from -70dB up to more than 0dB. Phantom power is provided for capacitor microphones. - Noise performance is up to finest laboratory standards (dB below input 20Hz to 20KHz 200ohm input termination) - The line input is designed for unbalanced circuits and will accept -30dB up to +24dB. The nominal operating level at the 'insert' point is -10dB. but as maximum output at that point is +24dB the PROCHANNEL can operate with any mixer or outboard equipment. THE OUTPUT STAGE An LED 'meter' shows levels immediately before the output stage. An output volume control gives the choice of output volume levels. The two output jack sockets are identical. Output is balanced 75 ohm with maximum output +26dB. Noise is approx. -80dB. THE COMPRESSOR The built-in JOEMEEK compressor is slightly different from the big studio unit so that it is easier to use with musical instruments. The attack is switched 1mS and 10mS. The release is variable from 250mS up to 3secs. There is an in/out switch for comparisons. The compression control is rotary. The compression ratio varies from 1.5 to 1 up to 7 to 1 depending on musical content. THE ENHANCER The enhancer adds harmonics to the musical signal making it richer and more exciting. The 'drive' control takes parts of the signal and feeds them to a separate compression processor. The compressed harmonics are 'tuned' by the 'Q' control and then mixed back into the musical signal by the enhance control. The whole effect is highly subjective and technical performance specifications are not helpful. OVERALL PERFORMANCE Frequency response +0 -0.5dB 10Hz to 50KHz Low frequency accuracy maintained to get clear unmuddled bass sounds onto digital recorders. Harmonic distortion less than 0.01% except where compression affects low frequency wave shape.
