The sliding cheek passes through the mouthpiece and allows the same principle of action as a gag. With strong contact to the curb rein attached to the lower ring, the mouthpiece is eased up the cheek of the bit as far as the slot will allow - the longer the space between the top and bottom of the slot (neck) of the cheek, the greater the leverage.
