Here we have a used 6' inch sweet iron with copper lozenge hanging cheek bit. Made by shires, brought for my horse but accidentally brought the wrong size and because I used it, I cannot return it. Has been used a few times till I realised it was the wrong size, since has been stored in my tack room.   Great bit for starting a horse as the sweet iron encourages salivation and acceptance of the bit and the copper lozenge reduces the nut cracker action seen when using a normal snaffle bit. A useful sweet iron bit consisting of "cherry roller" sides (stainless steel with copper smelted on and has 3 copper ridges) and a middle link containing four loose copper rings, with stainless steel U.S.A. Style gag shanks. This is a popular bit amongst Showjumpers, being similar in action to an American gag bit, but without the action of the mouthpiece being raised up inthe horse's mouth. The shanks give leverage & encourages the horse to keep his carriage lower as well as providing brakes!
