The Development of Byron's Philosophy of Knowledge: Certain

The Development of Byron's Philosophy of Knowledge: Certain

Taking a fresh approach to Byron, this book argues that he should be understood as a poet whose major works develop a carefully reasoned philosophy of knowledge. Situating him with reference to the thought of the period,it argues for Byron as an active thinker, whose final philosophical stance-reader-centred scepticism-has wide-ranging practical implications. The book examines Childe Harold I,II and III,The Giaour,Lara,Manfred and Don Juan, considering each as a step in Byron's evolving philosophy.

Cultivating Development: An Ethnography of Aid Policy and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Mosse, David, PUBLISHER: Pluto Press (UK), Development agencies and researchers are preoccupied with policy; with exerting influence over policy, linking research to policy and with implementing policy around the world. But what if development practice is not driven by policy? Suppose that the things that make for 'good policy' - policy that legitimises and mobilises political support - in reality make it impossible to implement? By focusing in detail on the unfolding activities of a development project in western India over more than ten years, as it falls under different policy regimes, this book takes a close look at the relationship between policy and practice in development. David Mosse shows how the actions of development workers are shaped by the exigencies of organisations and the need to maintain relationships rather than by policy; but also that development actors work hardest of all to maintain coherent representations of their actions as instances of authorised policy. Raising unfamiliar questions, Mosse provides a rare self-critical reflection on practice, while refusing to endorse current post-modern dismissal of development.

Thinking about Logic: An Introduction to the Philosophy of

Thinking about Logic: An Introduction to the Philosophy of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Read, Stephen, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, In this book, Stephen Read sets out to rescue logic from its undeserved reputation as an inflexible, dogmatic discipline by demonstrating that its technicalities and processes are founded on assumptions which are themselves amenable to philosophical investigation. He examines the fundamental principles of consequence, logical truth and correct inference within the context of logic, and shows that the principles by which we delineate consequences are themselves not guaranteed free from error. Central to the notion of truth is the beguiling issue of paradox. Its philosophical value, Read shows, lies in exposing the invalid assumption on which the paradox is built. Thinking About Logic also discusses logical puzzles which introduce questions relating to language, the world, and their relationship.

Keats and Hellenism: An Essay

Keats and Hellenism: An Essay

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Aske, Martin, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, This book proposes a fresh and original interpretation of Keats' use of classical mythology in his verse. Dr Aske argues that classical antiquity appears to Keats as a supreme fiction, authoritative yet disconcerting, and his poems represent hard endeavours to come to terms with the influence of that fiction. The major poems (most notably Endymion, Hyperion, the Ode on a Grecian Urn and Lamia) form a stage, as it were, upon which is played out a psychic drama between the modern poet and his classical muse. The study is especially bold in its assimilation of historical scholarship and literary theory to a close reading of the texts. Individual poems are discussed in the context of late Enlightenment and Romantic attitudes towards antiquity and in the light of recent critical theory, in particular the theory of literary history and influence formulated by Harold Bloom and Geoffrey Hartman. Keats emerges as a significant example of the way in which a poet tries to establish a distinct identity under the burden of history and of literary tradition. Buy Now

An analysis of class development in Papua New Guinea

An analysis of class development in Papua New Guinea

An analysis of class development in Papua New Guinea: This essay will outline the process of class formation within Papua New Guinea (PNG) and show that, although its developments are unique to the region, they are in line with the general capitalist trend of class development. This will be done by outlining a general definition of class in relation to Marxist ideology and then applying this viewpoint to the historical development of PNG in relation to capitalism and class formation. It will show the major influence that the middle class had in the promotion of class identity, particularly normalising class differences. The essay ends with a reflection on middle class values in PNG and how they influence, but are nevertheless, part of the adaptive nature of capitalism. It is concluded that from a Marxist perspective, understanding class formation in PNG is tantamount to understanding class theory in general.

The Ontology of the Accident: An Essay on Destructive

In the usual order of things, lives run their course and eventually one becomes who one is. Bodily and psychic transformations do nothing but reinforce the permanence of identity. But as a result of serious trauma,or sometimes for no reason at all,a subject’s history splits and a new, unprecedented persona comes to live with the former person - an unrecognizable persona whose present comes from no past and whose future harbors nothing to come; an existential improvisation,a form born of the accide

Laughter: An Essay on the Meaning of the Comic

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bergson, Henri Louis, PUBLISHER: Digireads.com, "Laughter: An Essay on the Meaning of the Comic" is Henri Bergson's treatise on comedy. Bergson makes three essential observations about laughter and comedy. Firstly that comedy is necessarily a human thing, secondly that laughter is a cerebral thing that requires detachment from the subject in order to laugh at it, and lastly that laughter plays an important social function. This interesting examination of what makes us laugh and why is a compelling and quick read, a must for any budding comedian or any one else seeking a greater understanding of humour.

The Purpose of Life: An Eastern Philosophical Vision

The Purpose of Life: An Eastern Philosophical Vision

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Filice, Carlo, PUBLISHER: University Press of America, Suppose that this world is not an accident, but an expression of a divine super-mind. What might motivate a divine super-mind to express itself? This book boldly contends that divine motives are guided by values that exist objectively. We exist to realize and enhance such values. This text defends a cosmic vision that has been prominent in the Indian subcontinent for thousands of years-a vision often embraced within the New Age movement. However, its defense here is strictly philosophical. Filice argues that even as characters in an imaginative divine game we still carry independent value, that a world governed by such values should be a fair world, and that earthly moral goals cannot be our only ambition. The Purpose of Life maintains that any divine being(s) involved must be in perpetual process, that humans must not be the only embodied subjects that matter, and that each of us is destined to live many lives. Easy-to-read, the book's 73 mini-chapters are specifically tailored to fit the stop-and-go rhythm of daily life.
