SCIENTISTS have turned to an Indian tree in the latest bid to beat the scourge of Scotland midges. A team of botanists and entomologists from Edinburgh University's Centre for Tropical Veterinary Medicine is experimenting with new solutions to the persistent pest. Led by Dr Alison Blackwell, the Scots scientist believes the bloodsucking insect - tagged the west coast piranha - may have met its match in neem tree oil. The scientists are looking at new insect repellents derived from the Indian neem tree. The Neem Tree is an evergreen indigenous to India. Neem oil is pressed from the seeds of the tree and is most commonly used to control insects and mites and minor wound care. Neem oil is also used to moisturize dry skin and is even gentle on sensitive skin. Neem oil contains Vitamin E and many essential amino acids which help restore moisture and elasticity to the skin and promote healthy hair re-growth. Apply to areas where itching is more pronounced to moisturise and protect from further midge attacks. Due to Neems natural collagen qualities this will repair damaged skin tissue and help stimulate healthy hair regrowth. Signs of mud fever are inflammation of the skin, leg swelling, cracked skin, weeping, hair falls out and hard scabs form. Neem oil should be rubbed directly on the infected area up to twice a day to help not only to soften and remove scabs but also the pain as Neem oil contains an anti-inflammatory that relieves the pain associated with mudfever. Using a barrier that contains Neem oil will also help to prevent further re-infection so if you know you are going to be in mud, a thick layer of Neem oil should be applied before the horse is turned out. Pro-Equine can supply larger quantities for individul needs. "Your neem oil is excellent for my horses and their sweetitch, I have used 1 litre already this summer so ordering some more". Mrs B "ln 12 years lve tried many, many different types of lotion and treatments for sweet itch, that claim to be fabulous. Neem oil started as ''l'll try it out'' but didnt think it would live up to its claims, but it did, so lm stocking up on it, so l never run out! thank you for living up to your claims". KT "Best neem I've seen for years, fast delivery too. Highly recommend!" W Stallin "Great stuff, kept the flies away all day, super fast delivery, thankyou so much!" PK "I started to use this product after it was recommended by a friend. I am delighted at how well it works. I have a pony who is very itchy in the summer months and his skins become very dry. I noticed a difference in his skin within a few days after starting using this product, now there is no dryness at all and he is not looking for posts or fences to rub on. As for keeping the flies off it does a great job. I put it on the itchy pony and noticed him in the field no tail swishing or head shaking and the others had had normal fly spray and were still being bothered. Now I use it on all as a repellent."
