Pelham- 5'' with leather roundings, great condition. The Hard rubber pelham is about the most popular variety of pelham, and the modern alternative to the vulcanite pelhams. The hard rubber coating softens the action of the curved mullen mouth of this pelham bit giving space for the tongue, with no collapse on the bars and no real palate pressure.  Hard rubber pelhams are best suited to horse that have enough space for a large mouthpiece and are ideal for novice riders using a stronger bit for the first time as the mouth is so mild. Pelhams are designed to be used with two reins, the 'snaffle' rein on the larger ring which should have a constant contact, and the curb rein is attached to the smaller loose bottom ring and is used when needed. The small hole in the shank just above the curb ring is for a lip strap, not essential but correct for showing and helps to keep the curb chain flat.  If the rider wishes to use only one pair of reins, roundings can be used to join the snaffle and curb rings together and the reins go on the loop of leather to give an action on both mouthpiece and curb when the rein is pulled.                                              SIZE 6 STRAIGHT BAR PELHAM WITH CURB CHAIN USED A COUPLE OF TIMES ONLY SO IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. The Pelham bit is often used for horses that prove too strong in a snaffle, the Pelham is a very popular bit. It uses a variety of pressures, which seem to work together to prove a very useful bit. The Pelham should theoretically be used with 2 reins, the first rein is attached to the snaffle rein, and the second rein attached to the ring at the bottom of the shank, when the first rein is used the Pelham acts like a hanging cheek snaffle, putting slight pressure on the poll, when the second rein is brought into play, this increases the leverage and lip pressure, and also the curb chain comes into play, the greater the distance between the cheek slot and the mouthpiece the greater the poll pressure, the greater the length of shank the greater the amount of leverage. The curb chain should be fitted so that the curb chain tightens when the second rein is brought into play, but there must be a bit of give so not to tighten up straight away. The Pelham can also be used with Pelham roundings for the young or the novice, as dealing with 2 reins may prove too much of a handful but the actions of Pelham become less differential. The Pelham should be used with 2 reins for showing.
