The hard rubber mullen mouthpiece is slightly curved to allow space for the tongue and eliminate the nutcracker action. The combination of control and comfort results in this bit being one of the most popular Pelham Bits. This high quality bit is also ideal for horses with sensitive mouths, as the rubber mouthpiece is softer than those made from stainless steel. The Mullen mouth is a very mild mouthpiece, it is an unvarying mouthpiece which means the pressure on the mouth doesn’t change very much, as it is a fixed mouthpiece. The bit puts pressure on the tongue and lips (corner of the mouth), it does use slight pressure on the bars depending on the size of your horses tongue. This bit is very useful for those horses who have a very soft mouth and don’t like complicated mouthpieces, it may also be useful for horses who back off the contact and need that extra bit of confidence in the bit.

The hard rubber coating softens the action of the curved mullen mouth of this pelham bit giving space for the tongue, with no collapse on the bars and no real palate pressure.  Hard rubber pelhams are best suited to horse that have enough space for a large mouthpiece and are ideal for novice riders using a stronger bit for the first time as the mouth is so mild. Pelhams are designed to be used with two reins, the 'snaffle' rein on the larger ring which should have a constant contact, and the curb rein is attached to the smaller loose bottom ring and is used when needed. The small hole in the shank just above the curb ring is for a lip strap, not essential but correct for showing and helps to keep the curb chain flat.  If the rider wishes to use only one pair of reins, roundings can be used to join the snaffle and curb rings together and the reins go on the loop of leather to give an action on both mouthpiece and curb when the rein is pulled. 5 1/2 inch pelham bit with curb chain and rein converters. Used a number of times on my friends Welsh Section D and my cob. Has worked wonders on them both! However, is no longer needed as the have both settled back into snaffle bits when they are out. It is perfect for a strong horse and gives you much greater control over the horse. Still in good condition, a little scuffed and the rein converters are a little stiff to take off. But overall, absolutely perfect to use on a strong horse with the rein converters rather than the double reins.
