Einerseits werden andere am Außenhandel beteiligte Länder beeinflusst, andererseits schlägt sich Chinas Entwicklung in seinem eigenen Handelsmuster nieder. Während der erste Aspekt hier ausgeklammert wird, gilt der Fokus dieser Arbeit Chinas eigener Handelsstruktur. Zielsetzung ist es, die Rolle Chinas in der internationalen Arbeitsteilung und die mit seiner wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung verbundenen Änderungen seines Handelsmusters aufzuzeigen. Nach einem kurzen Überblick über den Reformprozess und die aktuelle Wirtschaftslage in China werden theoretische Begriffe wie horizontale und vertikale Arbeitsteilung, inter- und intrasektoraler Handel sowie das Prinzip des komparativen Vorteils erklärt, an denen später das chinesische Handelsmuster beschrieben wird. Im Anschluss wird ein Zusammenhang zwischen Handelsmuster und Direktinvestitionen präsentiert. Ferner wird ein speziell auf den südostasiatischen Raum bezogenes, bei uns wenig bekanntes, Entwicklungsmodell vorgestellt und seine Anwendbarkeit auf China diskutiert. Das vorletzte Kapitel behandelt potentielle Entwicklungen und ihre Auswirkungen auf den chinesischen Außenhandel. Abschließend wird ein Fazit aus den vorangegangenen Beobachtungen gezogen.
