Copper Guernsey can – one 'pot' capacity - £20
Copper Guernsey can – one 'pot' capacity - £20 Traditional copper Guernsey can. The Guernsey Can is one of the last surviving relics of Guernsey's Norman ancestry with a pedigree of nearly one thousand years. The spherical shape uses the least material for the volume contained and is traditionally made in four sections with welted, folded seams and a flattened base brazed in place. The tall collar is brazed in place and designed to reduced spillage. The handle is wide with a reinforcing rib that also improves the grip and holds the body of the can at a non spill angle. A small Guernsey crest is brazed on to the front of the can. Formerly tinned internally for use this is now partially worn and probably best considered as decorative. Condition is 'used' with a few small dints and scars but still a very attractive piece of copperwork. Modern cans are made from two stamped pieces welded together and the handle lacks the reinforcing rib making them less comfortable to carry. The traditional Guernsey measure is known as a "pot", which has a content of four pints, just over two litres, making this one a one 'pot' can. Diamater 145 mm. Height to collar 145 mm, to rim 180 mm, overall 220 mm. We downsized and this has lived in a cupboard ever since. Considering moving again in New Year to an even smaller house so anything that has not seen the light of day since last time must go. Ad ID: Delivery Services Consumer Credit
