"Lord of War - Händler des Todes". Das Geschäft mit dem Krieg: 'Es befinden sich weltweit über 550 Millionen Schusswaffen im Umlauf. Das heißt, auf diesem Planeten hat jeder zwölfte Mensch eine Schusswaffe. Das führt zu der einen Frage - wie bewaffnet man die anderen elf ' Mit diesen Worten beginnt der Film Lord of War - Händler des Todes, während der Protagonist Yuri Orlov - Waffenhändler und somit der namensstiftende 'Händler des Todes' - inmitten von abertausenden leeren Patronenhülsen steht und den Weg einer Patrone, von der Herstellung in einer maroden sowjetischen Fabrik, über die Verschiffung nach Afrika, bis hin zum Schuss in den Kopf eines afrikanischen Jungen kommentiert. Das Zitat des fiktiven, jedoch an reale Personen angelehnten Waffenhändlers Orlov, verdeutlicht einerseits die erschreckend hohe Zahl von bewaffneten Menschen auf diesem Planeten, andererseits aber auch die Abgebrühtheit der Waffenhändler bei dieser Zahl nicht zu erschrecken, sondern lediglich zu überlegen, wie man noch mehr Waffen verkaufen könne. Krieg ist schließlich eines: ein sehr lukratives Geschäft. Genau auf diesen ökonomischen Aspekt von Krieg, den Waffenhandel als Geschäft mit dem Leiden anderer Menschen, wird die hier vorliegende Hausarbeit anhand der Analyse des Films Lord of War - Händler des Todes genauer eingehen. Doch nicht nur Waffenschieber und Hehler machen mit Kriegen ihren Gewinn. Spielfilme und Fernsehserien, welche fiktive oder authentische Kriegshandlungen zeigen, sind auch eine Form des Geschäfts mit dem Krieg. Wie kein anderes Genre verbindet der Film Realität und Fiktion und verschafft einerseits brisanten oder unliebsamen Themen ein Publikum und ungehörten Menschen ein Sprachrohr. Andererseits sind jedoch Filmemacher auch nur kommerziell- und erfolgsorientiert denkende Menschen, die sich mit dem 'Dauerbrenner' Krieg ein breiteres Publikum erhoffen. Im Verlauf dieser Hausarbeit wird die Definition dessen, was einen Film zum Kriegsfilm macht herausgearbeitet werden, um am Ende die Frage beantworten zu können, ob der Film Lord of War tatsächlich als solcher eingestuft werden kann. Die vorherige Analyse des Filmes wird sich primär auf die Darstellung des Geschäfts mit dem Krieg, den legalen und illegalen Waffenhandel und die Waffenhändler fokussieren, um den Aspekt 'Krieg als Geschäft' genauer zu beleuchten. Schließlich ist Lord of War 'eine filmische Besichtigungstour [...] hinter die Kulissen des illegalen Waffenhandels.'
