Very Rare Engravings & Lithographs 160 years old. Set of 28

Here is a collection of 28 very rare antique engravings and lithographs from the early s to s. The portraits are all of politicians and other famous people, many of whom were members of Grillon's Dining Club in London. Grillion's is a London dining club founded in . It was founded by the British diplomat Stratford Canning as a meeting place free from the violence of political controversy. The club had no premises but met at Grillion's Hotel on Albemarle Street, from which it took its name. Later it would meet at the Hotel Cecil. The club met weekly during parliamentary session. The first fifty years of the Grillion's Club is recorded in the book Grillion's Club: From Its Origin In To Its Fiftieth Anniversary, written quoting many of the club's records by Sir Philip De Malpas Grey Egerton. The book was privately printed at the Chiswick Press in . In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many leading statesmen belonged to the club, including prime ministers Gladstone, Salisbury, Balfour, Asquith, and Baldwin. I am selling a collection of 28 portraits. I have only ever seen some of these in the National Portrait Gallery in London. Each of the portraits is in remarkable condition considering they are at least 160 years old! Some have a few water stains to their edges but in the main, most of the portrait areas (roughly 10 by 7 inches) are in a very fine and presentable condition and would look superb when framed. Many of these sketches were done by R J Lane or George Richmond - members of the Royal Academy throughout the s. Some of the engravings were done by F C Lewis, engraver to the King. Some of the famous portraits here include Robert Harry Inglis and Granville George Leveson Gower. Many of these famous 28 people were also members of the Royal Society and Society of Antiquaries.
