He was of humble origins. He became a preacher at a later age in Baptist communities. His way of preaching was simple, direct, biblical and was characterised by a vers-a-vers explanation. He wrote several books.His fame is mainly based on the book ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’ published in . The less successful second part was published in . This book has been translated in many languages, also in Dutch, under the title ‘De christenreis naar de eeuwigheid’. The book in allegory form describes the life of a christian on earth. Besides the 'Christenreis', Bunyan has written a sequel with the title 'Christinnereis'.Bunyan has described his life in an autobiography titled ‘Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners’.
