Parts 1 to 4 contain De l'Esprit des Loix (including the Defense) and part 5 contains de Lettres Persanes. Collation; pp.Condition: beautiful half-leather covers with gold-stamped spine decoration in 6 compartments and with spine shields. Part 1 is missing a piece of the spine on the upper side and parts 1 and 4 small pieces from the bottom of the spine. Some pp. a bit damaged/creased. All in all a very neat and decorative set whereby the parts are individual and in that sense complete. Part 1 also includes 2 fold-out maps; one of the world, the other of Europe.¶ Montesquieu’s complete name was Charles Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu (Castle of La Brède near Bordeaux, 18 January - Paris, 10 February ), which is often shortened to Charles de Montesquieu or just Montesquieu, was a French philosopher. He is considered one of the founders of sociology and as one of the most important philosophers of the Enlightenment.The current political establishment of western democracies is based in part on his ideas and John Locke’s. An important part of this is his idea of the separation of powers (Trias Politica).
