In the Second World War, Jan van Oort () created the Paulus the woodgnome cartoon character; from his adventures were published in newspaper Het Vrije Volk. Van Oort called himself Jean Dulieu (French translation of Jan van Oort). Eventually, around daily strips would be made between and . In addition to these newspapers publications, Paulus also appeared in a large number of magazines and children's books, in colour and in many countries. Jean Dulieu received many awards for his work and is considered among the three foremost Dutch illustrators of his time, together with Marten Toonder and Hans G. Kresse. After he had stopped drawing Paulus the woodgnome, Dulieu made beautiful personal work, including a series of incredibly finely detailed portraits of famous people. During the major Dulieu retrospective at the DutchComics Museum in Groningen these portraits were displayed for the first time. This lot contains one of the portraits Jean Dulieu made in the s. But still saw professionals that the aging of the baby boom would inevitably lead to a demand for other strip shapes.Aimed at older readers. Everywhere was excited wanted to that Next Version of the strip. The later problems of many tv, even more video and unlimited games and picture-on-demand were still far enough away. Here from an attempt:Episode 1, actually a trial edition, of the legendary BABARIBA. Originally a ingestanste folder with real bullet holes, but unfortunately that was too expensive.) For a book signing at Silvester I came up with this print by Franka, very modern mobile (!) phoning in the red light district. Scene taken from the beginning of the Portuguese Gold ship. At that time I had it so busy that this ex-libris is borrowed from the Portuguese Gold ship: it is one of the indoor vignettes that were used as a sort of title pages in the "making of" file of the luxury versions. Which were of course in black/white.But I had when designing that vignette of course several set up. Here such an alternative design. A wonderful sketch of a loyal retriever in his master’s doorway, which would be irresistible to any dog lover. Unfortunately, the sketch has suffered foxing, and whilst most of this is outside the border so it could be reduced in size, there is a patch to the left of the dog within the border.
