Hi! I'm Lorna. As well as running The Language Studio, I teach English as a second language. My initial training in this saw me complete a BA Hons. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) & Linguistics at the University of Wolverhampton. I then went on to complete a CELTA or certificate in English language teaching, with Cambridge in Mallorjca. After teaching English for a couple of years in the South of Spain, I came back to the UK to complete my Masters in Linguistics at the Univeristy of York. I then went on to teach English for academic purposes at the University of Birmingham. I have also taught online and managed summer courses in the UK. My teaching is student-centred and communicative. I think that I'm a fun and friendly person and because of this my classes have a good atmosphere. I can help you to improve your General English, guide you with secure English language tests, such as IELTS or Trinity ISE and GESE, or can help you with a specific skill or focus. Tutor - Maths, English and Entrance Exams KS1/KS2 -

Tutor - Maths, English and Entrance Exams KS1/KS2 -

I am a PGCE qualified primary school teacher, currently teaching in Cambridge, looking to tutor English, Maths or entry exams such as the 11+ at the primary age range (3 - 11). I have a full DBS check through my current teaching position, which I am able to email prior to the commencement of tutoring. I am able to travel up to 20 miles around Cambourne. My fee is £30 per hour and I am willing to offer a reduction if more than one hour is required in a week. I am available after school and on weekends. Should you have any questions or wish to make a booking, please contact me via e-mail or telephone. I have included some further information below: Following completion of a law degree, I decided to go into teaching, having thoroughly enjoyed teaching English as a second language in Thailand. When volunteering in Thailand, I had the opportunity of teaching English to learners with English as an additional language. Large class sizes were challenging and exciting as I developed ways to maintain and develop learners' engagement and attainment. I have been awarded good and outstanding levels of teaching in multiple age phases. This standard continues to improve as I further my pedagogical knowledge. I am confident that reflecting on practice will enable me to continually develop my effectiveness as a teacher and a lifelong learner. During a University observed lesson at my school placement, I was delighted to be awarded the highest grade on my course. My desire to strive for excellence has been recognised in my current post where I have developed literacy skills using 'Talk For Writing'. Furthermore, following my final observation, my University published a case study exemplifying outstanding teaching practice, based on my lesson stating: "The learners' acquisition and application of literacy skills and concepts was high on the agenda of planning and teaching. Tasks were realistic, purposeful and engaged the learners in developing their skills. You exploited unexpected opportunities for developing skills in literacy by effectively extending the pupil's vocabulary by discussing synonyms, homophones and homonyms." Academic study has allowed me to reflect on teaching and learning using educational research. Having been praised on the detail and effectiveness of my evaluations, I continue to develop this skill in my current post. I thrive on making lessons fun, using high quality resources to provide memorable learning experiences. I believe that the empowerment of pupils, where they identify their next steps in learning and then state the success criteria needed to achieve the outcome, has a huge impact on progress. I have been praised for designing creative lessons which develop a variety of skills. One example was a lesson based on global poverty where learners had the opportunity to take responsibility for their own learning. Learners could decide which country to visit using an interactive 'Prezi' presentation which I designed. I had the perfect opportunity to use progressive questioning to both challenge and support learners. Work could then be celebrated self-assessed. This allowed learning to become more independent. I have many success stories, having already tutored a number of different ability children, some with English as an additional language.
