This fun little dinghy was purchased by us second hand for our son, who has now grown to 6'1" and wants to take on something bigger. The Byte is very similar to the Laser, (designed by the same person) but smaller and lighter and with the mainsheet and traveller in the middle of the boat, hence easier to sail. The dinghy is in good condition, with only a few scuffs and some minor gel coat repairs to the underside collected over the years. The mainsheet blocks and rope are new and all rigging is present and correct. Not shown in the photos due to the windy conditions but included is the sail and batons. The folding launching trolley is also available. The great thing about the Byte is that the hull is 3.7m long and weighs around 45 kg, so is easily lifted upside down onto the roof rack of a standard car (my wife takes the sharp end and I take the blunt end). The trolley then goes upside down on the hull and the boom and mast sections can be tied alongside the hull. The whole thing may then be secured with ratchet straps and bungees. We have had great fun with the Byte in a variety of locations, including taking it to the West coast of Ireland on the roof of the car for the last few summer holidays. This would be the ideal purchase for a young teenager who is looking for a bit of excitement. I have been able to sail it 2 up with my son - it is a bit of a squeeze but perfectly possible for a bit of basic instruction or if a couple of smaller sailors want to mess around on it together once they know what they are doing. Sail number (eligible for 'classic' racing series). All-fibreglass construction. For anyone unfamilar with these keeled dinghies, they were designed by the legendary Uffa Fox and are one of the world's most popular boats for racing series, raced all over the UK (including Holy Loch and Loch Lomond). They go like stink but with the stability advantages of a keel boat. Widely regarded as one of the most enjoyable boats around to sail ("the most fun you can have with a keel on"). Replacements parts are also surprisingly cheap. "Impala" is in VGC for the year, with no sign of hull problems and little work needing done to get her racing. The sails haven't seen much use and are in decent condition, with comparatively minor wear at wear points. To get her fully sailing she needs: * 2 X Shrouds (£ each last time I looked). * 1 X Connector for the mainsail uphaul (should be around £20) The plywood coaming was also removed after rotting at the edges. Simple and cheap fix (ply could be used again, but personally I'd use UPVC skirting or cut perspex sheet glued into the slots). A repair to the rudder could do with repainting. Mast and rigging are in VGC. The gimbal for the main sheet only uses one of its two available pulleys as currently set up. If I was keeping the boat I'd either get a 2nd-hand single-pulley gimbal or a re-rig the sheets to the rear deck to make use of both pulleys and give lower-geared sheeting as on modern F15s. I'd also re-rig the control lines so that they're accessible further aft (currently they're operated from the mast foot). Hull is smooth, but she will need antifoul for the season. She's a good, sound boat looking for someone to personalise and race her. The UK Flying Fifteen association are a good source of info..
