In the Second World War, Jan van Oort () created the Paulus the woodgnome comic character; from the adventures of Paulus were published in newspaper Het Vrije Volk. Van Oort called himself Jean Dulieu (French translation of Jan van Oort). Eventually, around daily strips would be made between and .
