Black Frankenstein: The Making of an American Metaphor

For all the scholarship devoted to Mary Shelley's English novel Frankenstein, there has been surprisingly little attention paid to its role in American culture, and virtually none to its racial resonances in the United States. InBlack Frankenstein,Elizabeth Young identifies and interprets the figure of a black American Frankenstein monster as it appears with surprising frequency throughout nineteenth- and twentieth-century U.S. culture,in fiction, film, essays, oratory, painti

The Ride of Our Lives: Roadside Lessons of an American

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Mike Leonard, PUBLISHER: Books On Tape, Mike Leonard is a lucky man. It's not everyone who gets parents like Jack and Marge. At eighty-seven, Jack is a pathological optimist with an inexhaustible gift of gab. Marge, Jack's bride of sixty years, though cut from the same rough bolt of Irish immigrant cloth, is his polar opposite-pessimistic and proud of it. What was their son, Mike, thinking when he took a sabbatical from his job with NBC News so he could pile these two world-class originals along with three of his grown kids and a daughter-in-law into a pair of rented RVs and hit the road for a month? Mike was thinking that he wanted to give his parents the ultimate family reunion. And so, one February morning, three generations of Leonards set out on their journey under the dazzling Arizona sky. Thirty minutes later, one of the humongous recreational vehicles has an unplanned meeting with a concrete island at a convenience store. Thus begins the adventure of a lifetime-and an absolute gem of a book. In the course of their humorous, often poignant cross-country tour, from the desert Southwest to the New England coastline, the Leonards reminisce about their loves, their losses, and their rich and heartwarming (and sometimes heartbreaking) lives, while encountering a veritable Greek chorus of roadside characters along the way. The home stretch finds the clan racing back to Chicago, hoping to catch the arrival of the next generation, Jack and Marge's first great-grandchild. Through it all, Mike pieces together acentury of family lore and lunacy-and discovers surprising sides to his parents that allow him to see them in a whole new light. Mike Leonard has captivated millions of television viewers with his wry and witty feature stories for NBC's Today. Now he brings that same engaging charm and keen insight to the foibles and passions of his own blessedly unique family. By turns uproariously funny and deeply moving, The Ride of Our Lives delivers a lifetime of laughs, lessons, and priceless memories. "From the Hardcover edition."

Metaphor in American Sign Language (Hardcover)

Metaphor in American Sign Language (Hardcover)

Only recently have linguists ceased to regard metaphors as mere frills on the periphery of language and begun to recognize them as corner-stones of discourse. Phyllis Wilcox takes this innovation one step further in her fascinating treatise Metaphor in American Sign Language. Such an inquiry has long been obscured by,as Wilcox calls it,the shroud of iconicity. American Sign Language's iconic nature once discouraged people from recognising it as a language; more recently it has served to confuse lingu

500 Nations, an Illustrated History of North American Indians. Not a book for the Emotional

500 NATIONS, By Alvin M.Josephy, jr An illustrated History of North American Indian nations. How they lived (and died). How the West was won, at the expense of almost every native tribe, from the Inca to the Inuit and almost every Plains and Desert dwelling tribe that occupied North America. Harrowing in many places, to read the documented accounts of how the numerous tribes were decimated by the invasion from the white man. Beautifully illustrated, with many archive publications depicting the primitive manner in which the tribes lived. Their own battles to survive, and the pacts that they formed. From Farmers to Warriors, this book has to be read from start to finish, in order to understand but a little of the harsh, yet wonderful lifestyles, that these ancient peoples endured. I found it difficult to put this book down once I started reading, and the picture really do bring the accounts to life, superbly written whilst maintaining a sense of accuracy from the research material used. With about 400 pages, it's difficult to know what to ask for such a work, I simply hope that whoever buys it will enjoy it as much as I, and be as impressed and emotionally humbled by the content as I was. American Lightning: Terror, Mystery, Movie-Making, and the

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Blum, Howard, PUBLISHER: Crown Publishing Group (NY), It was an explosion that reverberated across the country--and into the very heart of early-twentieth-century America. On the morning of October , the walls of the Los Angeles Times Building buckled as a thunderous detonation sent men, machinery, and mortar rocketing into the night air. When at last the wreckage had been sifted and the hospital triage units consulted, twenty-one people were declared dead and dozens more injured. But as it turned out, this was just a prelude to the devastation that was to come. In "American Lightning," acclaimed author Howard Blum masterfully evokes the incredible circumstances that led to the original "crime of the century"--and an aftermath more dramatic than even the crime itself. With smoke still wafting up from the charred ruins, the city's mayor reacts with undisguised excitement when he learns of the arrival, only that morning, of America's greatest detective, William J. Burns, a former Secret Service man who has been likened to Sherlock Holmes. Surely Burns, already world famous for cracking unsolvable crimes and for his elaborate disguises, can run the perpetrators to ground. Through the work of many months, snowbound stakeouts, and brilliant forensic sleuthing, the great investigator finally identifies the men he believes are responsible for so much destruction. Stunningly, Burns accuses the men--labor activists with an apparent grudge against the Los Angeles Times's fiercely anti-union owner--of not just one heinous deed but of being part of a terror wave involving hundreds of bombings. While preparation is laid for America's highest profile trial ever--and the forces of labor and capital wage hand-to-hand combat in the streets--two other notable figures are swept into the drama: industry-shaping filmmaker D.W. Griffith, who perceives in these events the possibility of great art and who will go on to alchemize his observations into the landmark film The Birth of a Nation; and crusading lawyer Clarence Darrow, committed to lend his eloquence to the defendants, though he will be driven to thoughts of suicide before events have fully played out. Simultaneously offering the absorbing reading experience of a can't-put-it-down thriller and the perception-altering resonance of a story whose reverberations continue even today, "American Lightning" is a masterpiece of narrative nonfiction.

The China Diary of George H. W. Bush: The Making of a Global

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Engel, Jeffrey A. / Bush, George H. W., PUBLISHER: Princeton University Press, Available in print for the first time, this day-by-day diary of George H. W. Bush's life in China opens a fascinating window into one of the most formative periods of his career. As head of the United States Liaison Office in Beijing from to , Bush witnessed high-level policy deliberations and daily social interactions between the two Cold War superpowers. "The China Diary of George H. W. Bush" offers an intimate look at this fundamental period of international history, marks a monumental contribution to our understanding of U.S.-China relations, and sheds light on the ideals of a global president in the making. In compelling words, Bush reveals a thoughtful and pragmatic realism that would guide him for decades to come. He considers the crisis of Vietnam, the difficulties of detente, and tensions in the Middle East, while lamenting the global decline in American power. He formulates views on the importance of international alliances and personal diplomacy, as he struggles to form meaningful relationships with China's top leaders. With a critical eye for detail, he depicts key political figures, including Gerald Ford, Donald Rumsfeld, Deng Xiaoping, and the ever-difficult Henry Kissinger. Throughout, Bush offers impressions of China and its people, describing his explorations of Beijing by bicycle, and his experiences with Chinese food, language lessons, and Ping-Pong. Complete with a preface by George H. W. Bush, and an introduction and essay by Jeffrey Engel that place Bush's China experience in the broad context of his public career, "The China Diary of George H. W. Bush" offers an unmediated perspective on American diplomatic history, and explores a crucial period's impact on a future commander in chief.

The image as deployed in myth and in metaphor originates as a representation of paternity and,by extension, authorship of ideas, works of art, legislation, and the like.
