The places are selected to be representative of their type, whether natural scenery, great commercial cities, ancient castles, abbeys, manor-houses, primeval antiquities like Stonehenge, old harbours, battlefields, cathedrals and churches. The contents are abundantly illustrated with pictures, engravings, maps, etc. as illustrated in the photos. Published by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co in the late 19th century, this edition has been bound by Charles Goodall of Leeds in quarto leather with dark blue leather spines with decorative endpapers. The Scots Independent was the official newspaper of the Scots National League which subsequently merged into the National Party of Scotland () and thence into the Scottish National Party (). Apart from No 1, which has some water marks, the copies are in very good condition. Membership of the SNL never exceeded so these two volumes had a very limited print run.
