Biological Toxins and Bioterrorism

Biological Toxins and Bioterrorism

Biological Toxins and Bioterrorism: Biological toxins are an important part of our world, a reality with which we need to cope, so in parallel with understanding their mechanisms of action and thereby improving our fundamental knowledge, there are successful efforts to utilize them as therapeutics against some debilitating human and animal diseases. In view of the complexity of different types of biotoxins and the broad range of toxin structure, physiology, utility, and countermeasures including regulatory issues, it was thus aimed to compile a book on biotoxins and bioweapons. This reference work in the Toxinology handbook series gathers together knowledge from around the globe about naturally inspired and manufactured biological weapons. The authors describe how they work how authorities may detect their presence, prevent their use, and diagnose their impacts and the means by which medical and paramedical professionals may treat victims. Also described are how they have been used to further our knowledge and what insights they have given us into evolutionary and physiological processes. Finally, it is also discussed how these toxins can be used as therapeutics and what the implications of such therapeutics are to their use as biothreat agents. This volume provides a reference accessible to scientists, educators, and medical experts alike with an interest in biotoxins, focusing on the major toxins used as bioweapons. Regulatory agencies will also bene t from the information provided in this book. Some in the intended audience may need to understand how they elicit their effects and how we can defend ourselves against them. Others may be interested in the sometimes colorful histories that surround this subset of biotoxins that can be and, in some cases, have been used as weapons.

Marine and Freshwater Toxins

Marine and Freshwater Toxins: This book presents the structure of the main toxins of aquatic origin, their distribution, producing species and vectors, their mechanisms of action, the clinical aspects of envenomation in humans, their effects in laboratory or wild animals, their toxicokinetic properties, including the relevant treatment, detection methods and regulatory aspects for management. The work also presents the main species associated with the injuries, poisonings their toxins, mechanism of action and the clinical aspects of the envenomations by aquatic animals and discusses the actual measures utilized in the first aid and hospital treatments. Marine toxins such as palytoxins, brevetoxins, saxitoxin, ciguatoxins, okadaic acid, azaspiracid toxins, equinatoxins are also dealt with in this volume. These toxins can be lethal as well as having a complex and large molecular structure and display mechanisms by which they act very specifically on targets, receptors or on critical body proteins.

Today Chinese cuisine is enjoyed in many parts of the world, yet little is known in the West about the technologies involved in making its characteristic ingredients. H. T. Huang's book is the first history of Chinese food technology in a Western language. It describes the conversion of agricultural commodities into food and drink, and explores the origins, development and scientific basis of traditional Chinese technology as applied to the processing of four food categories: the fermentation of alcoholic d

Biological Functions for Information and Communication

Biological Functions for Information and Communication

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Sawai, Hidefumi, PUBLISHER: Springer, By incorporating biologically-inspired functions into ICT, various types of new-generation information and communication systems can be created. Just some example of areas already benefiting from such design inspiration are network architectures, information processing, molecular communication, and complex network modeling for solving real world-problems. This book provides the theoretical basis for understanding these developments and explains their practical applications. Highlighted inserts appears throughout to help readers to understand the very latest topics in these emerging research fields. The book ends with a more philosophical discussion on how new ICT solutions can be found by looking at analogous systems in biology. This new way of thinking may help researchers and practitioners to apply innovative ideas in developing next-generation technologies.

Nanoparticles and Nanodevices in Biological Applications:

Nanoparticles and Nanodevices in Biological Applications:

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bellucci, Stefano, PUBLISHER: Springer, This is the first volume in a series of books on selected topics in Nanoscale Science and Technology based on lectures given at the well-known INFN schools of the same name. The aim of this collection is to provide a reference corpus of suitable, introductory material to relevant subfields, as they mature over time, by gathering the significantly expanded and edited versions of tutorial lectures, given over the years by internationally known experts. The present set of notes results in particular from the participation and dedication of prestigious lecturers, such as Vincenzo Balzani, Santina Carnazza, Andrea Salis Barbara Panessa-Warren and Stefano Bellucci. As usual, the lectures were subsequently carefully edited and reworked, taking into account the extensive follow-up discussions. A tutorial lecture by Vincenzo Balzani and collaborators (Univ. Bologna, Italy) introduces the reader to the topic of molecular devices and machines, seen as a journey into the nano world. Santina Carnazza (Univ. of Messina, Italy) contribution deals with surface bio-functionalization aimed to enhance promonocytic cells adhesion and spatial confinement, and micro-patterning of polymer surfaces. Andrea Salis and co-workers (Univ. Cagliari, Italy) go about biotechnological applications of lipases immobilized onto porous materials, i.e. biodiesel production and biosensors. Understanding the biological effects of nanoparticles at the mesoscopic (microPET) and microscopic levels (light and electron microscopy) is essential to predict nanoparticle processing, degradation and excretion in cells, and mammalian systems in general. In this respect, Barbara Panessa-Warren (BNL, USA) in her lecture provides the reader with an overview of the types of phenomena occuring with living cells and tissues exposed to nanoparticles, as well as new experimental data on the biological cell and tissue responses in vitro and in vivo to nanoparticles designed for bio-medical use. An extensive contribution to review recent results about the toxicity of nanomaterials, concentrating in particular on carbon nanotubes, is the subject of the tutorial by Stefano Bellucci (INFN-LNF, Italy).
