William Laureston Hedges enlisted into the South African Union Defence Force on the 31 May and was posted to the Middle East to serve with the 8th Army. He served with the S.A 1st Infantry Division which converted into the 6th Armoured Division at the end of and would have been present at Gazala and El Alamein. William first served with 33 Coy Motor Transport Q.S.C then with 33rd S.A Mobile General Workshops Technical Services Corps and finally with the 44th Railway and Harbour Brigade - Tank Corps. William was discharged on the 11February after 3 Years 257 days war service. Service details typed and provided with the medal group when previously purchased, Identity Book Number (not included). Defence Medal, an original World War Two British Defence Medal

A BOXED ORIGINAL DEFENCE MEDAL ( to ) WITH RIBBON AND CERTIFICATE Awarded to MR A C D Penny of Hastings. Presented in original franked box and with ribbon and a note from the Home Secretary, Central Index, Home Office, Whitehall, SWI. The return address on the back of the box The medal shows the uncrowned head of King George VI. The reverse bears the Royal Crown resting on an oak tree, flanked by two lions above the words 'The Defence Medal', with the date top left and top right. The ribbon is orange coloured in the centre flanked by stripes of green to symbolise enemy attacks on Britain's green and pleasant land, with narrow black stripes to represent the black-out. I understand the Defence Medal was awarded to non-military personnel. This person was in the Intelligence Section of the Civil Defence throughout the war and in the subsequent years until the Civil Defence was disbanded.
