This is an Argyle China plate made in England, in Burslem Staffordshire. It is labelled "Into Battle" a picture by James Prinsep Beadle. It is the charge of the 36th Ulster Division on 1st July . It is limited edition plate (number 266) produced for the Somme Association. IJser medal in memory of service at the "battle of the

Click here to view this lot This Medal was instituted on and was awarded to Belgian and Allied soldiers that fought on the river the IJser between 17 and 31 October and were able to stop the German advance. The medal is made of bronze with a beautiful green patina all over the medal. On top of the medal the word "IJser" is enamelled in a green field, on the reverse with the monogram "A", representing King Albert. On the front of the medal we see a man with a lance, who symbolises the Belgian soldier who brought the German army to a standstill. The reverse shows the battlefield with a wounded (Belgian) lion and the word IJser again The Ribbon is red with black borders, which symbolises blood and death, the battle of the Yser was a bloody battle in which Belgian soldiers died which amounted to 1/3 of the total Belgian army.Excellent collect worthy condition,These medals are getting hard to obtain. The eyelet of the ring is half open. I hadn’t noticed this until taking the pictures. Execution of the Namoa Pirates at Kowloon, Hong Kong, China

These old (and graphic) photographs shows the beheading of 6 out of the total 15 Namoa pirates in Kowloon City in … On the 3rd of December, , the Douglas, Lapraik, and Co’s coasting steamer, the ‘Namoa’ (commanded by Captain Thomas Guy Pocock) left for Swatow, Amoy, and Foochow. On board were several Europeans and a large number of Fuhkien Chinese passengers returning home from California. The Namoa was attacked by daring Chinese pirates who poured out of a hatch in their dozens and – armed with revolvers – killed Captain Pocock. In a carefully planned raid, they ransacked luggage and robbed passengers of their treasured US dollars which each had been saving through years of toil. After debating whether to burn the Namoa, the pirates instead abandoned ship, allowed the hostages to live and transferred their booty to getaway ships. The public, however, were furious as the ship returned to Hong Kong… The pirates were arrested by the Chinese government and were sent to Kowloon city for execution. The beheadings occurred on April 17th and May 11th of . It appears both the local and mainland governments welcomed their demise. Captain Thomas Guy Pocock has a memorial dedicated to him at Happy Valley Cemetery. The photos themselves are original Albumen photographs that have been framed which makes the pictures stand out against the clear white frame.
