Zook: A Look at R. Harold Zook's Unique Architecture
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Green, Betty, PUBLISHER: Ampersand, Inc., The work of architect R. Harold Zook has been recognized as historically significant, particularly in Hinsdale, Illinois where he resided for 26 years. He demonstrated whimsy, spirituality and romanticism with attention to many details called fussy by some. Although many of the remaining Zook homes are small by today's standards, a Chicago Tribune article by Mary Daniels described Zook's work as, "Charmingly unique and superbly crafted. It was, in today's vernacular, user friendly. A Zook house smiles when it sees you, makes you feel happy and protected the moment you walk in." Zook, an apprentice to American Institute of Architects' gold medal winner, Howard Van Doren Shaw, was influenced not only by Shaw's work but also by the philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th century. Many of Mr. Zook's homes and buildings have succumbed to the rubble pile. Fortunately, his home and studio have been saved.
