Antique Ladies Shoe Stretchers

These are black metal adjustable shoe stretchers. A 12 inch ruler is included in some of the pictures to give a general idea of size but they can be adjusted for an over-all length of from 9 inches (23 cms) to 12 inches (30 cms). They appear to have been repainted with black paint at some time in their life but this has worn away in places to expose the metal beneath. The number "5" may be seen stamped in the metalwork under the paint - presumably the ladies' shoe size they were intended for.  Age-wise all I know for certain is that they are from long before the s but I believe they probably date from around the late Victorian or Edwardian era.
